hey everybody,
I was just weighing the advantages and disadvantages of a VAFC hack vs an EMS setup. I am looking at cost vs reliability.
I will only be boosting 7 PSI for the first few months or a year, and I dont really want to go overkill on the fuel mgmt. I can try to get all the parts for the hack used to lower the price, but as far as the hack goes what all would I need? Also I want to get a wideband O2 sensor kit, what do you all recommend? I have heard some good things about the FJO.
VAFC hack:
-Apexi VAFC
-J&S Ultra Safeguard V2
-DSM 450s (what do I have to do to get them to fit?)
with the hack, how long would the stock fuel pump last? what about the FPR? anything else that I need to upgrade to make the hack work?
Also can I get the DSM 450's from a Mitsubishi dealership (instead of a junk yard)? these are the injectors out of the Eclipse GST/GSX right? do they come from a specific year/gen Eclipse?
AEM EMS:
-EMS
-harness???
-injectors? will DSM 450's work?
-AEM FPR
-AEM fuel rail
-Walbro 255lph
I wont need a J&S with this setup right? at 7-8 PSI is there anything else I need or dont need on this list?
TIA

J&S is -never- a bad idea.

From my understanding you sorta need it if you do the hack since that method advancs the timing a lot. But is it really needed with an AEM EMS setup? or does the EMS have it's own timing retard function, I'm almost certain that it does have a timing function though.

How does a V-AFC affect ignition timing? It can't.
All I know is that if you do the VAFC hack you'll end up with a lot of timing advance, which is why you need the J&S Ultra...because the VAFC can not retard timing.

well well well.... for once i get to give you my opinion, instead of asking for yours
IMO, EMS is the way to go. i have one on the way hat should be here around the first of the year. IF you decide to upgrade later, EMS will allow so much more capabilities than the AFC hack would. plus, you could actually fine tune the EMS and be able to proably push closer to 10psi if you wanted to. the thing i like the most is the fact that you can upload just about anything to the EMS. if AEM comes out with a better, updated software, you can just load it right into the EMS, or if you have different setting you want to run on the track or the street, just uplaod the new maps. regardless of either one you go with, you will need to have knowledge of tuning, but by using the EMS over the AFC hack, it will but much more straighforward b/c you will be using it for it intended use

I guess I was just looking for an excuse to get boosted right away, but after further study and input from several H-T members the VAFC hack setup may end up costing more than the EMS and it is only limited to around 10-11 PSI(hack).

well, if you are interested, i've got some RC 550s that are intended for a DSM, so you'll have to use resistors.
but yes, after playing with the software, and talking to a few people, I am convinced that AEM is the way to go. talk to Viren (b18bturbo), he has good prices on them, and you can't beat his customer service

oh yeah, i forgot to add, if you have a wideband (i just bought one from techedge for about 300 bux), you can punch in your desired Lambda, and it automatically programs it for WOT and part throttle

I believe all I will need/want is:
-EMS
-injectors
-guages & pods(boost, oil and fuel pressure)
-Tial 35mm WG
-Apexi Twin Chamber BOV
-tap oil pan (anyone selling an extra 01 Lude oilpan?)
-miscellaneous gaskets, lines, hoses, fittings, clamps, etc
After the Christmas holidays I am going to start shopping around for that stuff, and hopefully by the end of January or mid-February I will be boosted.

well, the ones i have aren't actually mine, a friend was letting me use them b/c i was going to try them out, but then decided to just go ahead and buy some 850s, but he wants like $300 for them, so, i'd say find some DSMs for $50
