I was wondering if anyone had had 3rd gear problems in their ITR. I noticed that when i took my Mom's R to the track that everytime i shifted into 3rd it wasnt smooth, didnt really grind just like clicked into gear. I dunno if that means anything but i was just wondering. It does that every now and then when i mash on it???

any help would be appriciated

 

i dont know .. my r goes in smooth to 3rd gear

but sometimes it's hard to put into first gear

 

It depends on the rpm.

 

well it goes in smooth usually all the time at low rpm its just at redline when it is different

 

not too unusual, its most likely the 3rd gear synchro. just dont slam the gears

so when will we see pics of your mom?

 

When I get lazy with the clutch I crunch 2nd and 3rd sometimes. Just make sure the clutch if fully depressed and you should be fine.

3rd gear ownz me, y0. If I ever miss a shift, it's always that one. There's something deceptive about the way it engages that makes me think it's in when it isn't. It's like the synchro click is way bigger than the engagement click or something.

Yes, 3rd can be a problem in the ITR tranny. Mine is being replaced for a 2nd time under warranty . Car has only 17k miles and 1 abusive driver

damn that sucks..how do you know it went out..did it just not go into third anymore..BTW my moms R has 29k miles on it..its her daily driver but she drives the wrx alot now so its not driven as much now

I have no more problems with that imfamous 1st-&gt;2nd and 2nd-&gt;3rd high rev (red line) shifting since I changed my trans fluid (honda mtf) and started running through the gears (with the clutch in) while my car warms up. That, and I started being more dilligent with my left foot.

 

Don't slam the gears especially 3rd. It is a known weakness of the ITR tranny. I just had my tranny synchro replaced under warrenty for the 3rd gear crunch.

Besides, slamming gears does not get you that much faster lap times. I'm not telling you to shift like a granny either, just make sure clutch fully depressed before shifting into 3rd.

Smoothness ownz speed shifter on the circuit.

 

I have best results with new tranny fluid (once a year) and bleed my clutch before each event. The R's clutch fluid gets dirty real fast and if you bleed before a track event you can be sure that the clutch fully seperates from the pressure plate and no "gridage" going into 3rd gear. I don't belive 3rd gear is spinning when you go from 2nd to 3rd (since they are on differect tracks) so the syncros has a lot of work to do and wears out fairly quick. If you are on the track and it starts to grind I push the clutch in and wait a split second then go into 3rd.

 

Smooth shifts. Not fast and the furious shifts

Sometimes 2nd gear doesn't stick for me. 1/1000
