Importing Canadian car to USA
I'm sure some of you have done this, just wondering what steps need to be taken when doing this (the search is a piece of junk).. looks like I'll be moving to Pittsburgh and am bringing my SiR down with me.. any help would be appreciated..
I was talkign to a guy who did the same import you did. He said it was very easy since your car was built in the US, now if it was an ITR it would difficult and lots of taxes, but since the car was built in the US it will be cheaper.
Your VIN does begin with 1 right?

If you are moving, you will not need to do any kind of importing. The car is part of your personal possesions, and you get to bring it along without any major hassles. The only things to worry about are compliance with US Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, and any emissions laws that Pa. might have that are not the same as Canada.
The only other thing is any lien that might be on the car if you still owe money on it. Your lending institution in Canada might not let you take the car out of the country on a permanent type basis without first paying off the loan.

any issues with a 'modified' vehicle??.. ie. should i take off the intake and exhaust (the most 'visible' of modifications) before doing any type of certification?
I'd think you would only have to do that if the car failed when you tried to get a PA inspection.....it would prolly fail for emissions if anything.....but if you fail for emissions, take off the engine mods, and try again. It costs like $50 to get an emissions test....so you won't want to fail too many times...huhu
You should have no problems importing the car into the US since you are emigrating...it's part of your personal stuff. But you should call and find out for sure first!

if it's only an emmisions test then I'm not too worried.. I was afraid they'd look at the exhaust and deem it non-DOT compliant and send me back home..
.. thanks for all the info..
