It will probably pass the sniffer..but should not pass visual. JDM motors are supposed to be automatic fail, though I've *heard* of people passing.

i keep hearing that they wont pass but not from anybody that has actually tried. its always a friend of a friend, as far as i have read im still going to say it will as long as its all hooked up right and not stolen. if somebody has actually been to the ref with a JDM engine in there car and has been turned down let us hear about it.

isn't the problem that the ref cannot check to see if the motor is stolen or not?

yea thats true...they will put the #s into the computer to see if it is stolen or not...problem with a JDM motor is nothing will come up...the best you can do is show them proof of purchase on the motor...

However it is also true that a japanese motor is illegal...and should be failed during the visual....

the reason why i said should and not will is cause it really depends on the ref you see....

I have a JDM b18c...im in CA...I WILL be seeking out a ref soon...im just gonna hope for a cool ref...if not they are surely going to shaft me....

if that happens...anyone wanna buy a B18c setup?...

Actually, Texas is getting a whole new dyno emission test, and a new obd2 plug in test. They are starting beggining of may 2002. I hope mine passes the obd2 test, cause I just got my engine

Read signature......if the JDM engine has the same smog equipment of the USDM variant it will pass.

According to spade's link:

Japanese Replacement Engines
Used engines imported from Japan can be used as replacement engines as long as the engine being used has been identified as functionally identical to the original engine. Please refer to the engine importers catalogue to determine if a replacement engine is legal for installation in your vehicle.

So you're saying that in the importers catalogue, it says it's not legal?

I wouldn't try to get a JDM motor approved at the ref. Getting a usdm worries me enough
