In CA there is absolutely nothing you can do to legally smog your car with a JDM motor. You have to know "a guy". They are out there, ask your friends to ask their friends and prepare to spend some money.

Do you know someone that lives out of state, ask if you can register your car there?

OGAG.. what motor did u drop in... and into what car.. more information is needed to really tell you if u stand a chance about going to the REF or not..(I'm referring to cost of smog equipment you may need, some egines are worth getting certified..B18C JDM GSR OBD1 is worth it.. but a 1st B16 well basically is not)

thats BS
u can get a BAR sticker...
or if u put the same type of motor in
like replaced ur GSR with a JDM GSR
then u dont have to do ****, nobody will know the difference
go to a cali ref to become legal
california state law has some very clear rules about being legal. You have to keep all the emissions that your year car has, and the motor you are running has to be same year or newer.

well honestly the 88-91 civics... LS motors..are easiest to get passed..because if you choose the b16a route you will have to upgrade to OBD1 DEL SOL SPEC crap(I can be wrong but that what a ref had informed with with).. though I have heard of a few guys in cali been able to pass them without spending to much.. hopefully they will add to this thread....for an 92-95 civic.. most of the 94up Bseries engines can be used from japan since they are all OBD-1 basically over there and will not require a lot of added smog equipment since you can basically reuse most of your original civic smog equipment..for 96-00 civics.. I would honestly try to go USDM since the JDM engines do not have the CFK sensor.. and a few other OBD-2 sensors.. which can make u fail the visual as well as diagnostic testing at most ref stations..I say visit your local ref.. and ask him a few question, from my experience they will help you out and try to give you pointers to help you meet all requirments... if I'm wrong on any of this information.. someone Correct me =P

jdm motors are now legal in cali!! of course there are restrictions. the catch is that the motor must be exactly the same as a motor in the states (compression doesn't really count cause they won't be able to see that).

so that means getting a jdm b18c to pass will be just as hard as a b18c1. however getting a b16a to pass in a 90-93 teg or 88-91 civic isn't gonna be easy (cause technically you would have to be running a hydro tranny....basically make the jdm b16a up to spec with a usdm b16a2 or b16a3 out of a del sol or civic si).

Just get all the smog equiptment and route all the vacuum lines.... just like it would be on the usdm counterpart and you should be fine.

there are other basic swap rules though:
-motor must be same year or newer than car (there is only so much checking they can do for thiis. for example, putting a 90 LS motor into a 91 civic isn't going to be a problem, the motors are the same, so just tell them its a 91. or if you're putting a 94 gsr motor into a 96 you'd just have to swap all the 96+ smog and obd2 equptment over to the 94 motor and just tell them its a newer one...they won't know the difference).
-motor must retain all the smog equptment and diagnostic system. It doesn't matter what car its going in, its gotta have the stuff from the car the motor came in. Thus if you're putting a 92+ motor into your 91 or older you need to convert to obd1, and do some other little stuff depending on your specific situation.

let us know what motor it is and what car its going in and we can probably be of more help.

Texas kicks *** I have a 92 Civic with a 1st gen JDM B16A with a hardcore enough ECU and P&P that it likely wouldn't pass smog and NOBODY CARES. Assuming they even pop your hood, they don't know/care what thier looking at. Its one of them damn fer'in cars.
