Default Oil feed line suggestions for you guys that need them!

When I installed my custom turbo setup, I used a -4 line for my oil feed. My turbo was a fresh rebuild, and smoked like a bastard when it was the slightest bit cold.

It took me a while to get around to it, but I ended up replacing the section of hose that runs from the T to the turbo with -3. Car is perfect now. No smoke at all. It must have been dumping quite a bit in there because it was not running smooth, probably choking the motor up with that thick, juicy 10w-30.

I will post pics later of my setup to give you newer guys some ideas. The turbo is a T3/4. I have a -4 line about 1 foot running from the block to a brass T. From there I have the stock oil press sensor, and now the -3 oil feed to the turbo. I used a hose end that goes from -3 to a -4AN fitting (saved a couple bucks by not having to replace it with a -3 to 1/8" adapter.

Anyway, hope this helps somebody!

Hmm, good to know. I was thinking about using the autometer reducer for this. Anyone else go from -4 to -3 with any results?
I would think that the smaller line would increase velocity, but I guess not.

Heres a question......are all the center sections in turbo's the same size? Maybe some turbo's hold more oil inside and some hold less? Therefore some working better with -3 than the -4 lines.

Don't you think its more likely that your drain was UNDERsized rather than your feed oversized?

I would say your drain is too small before I would say that your fed too much oil to the turbo.

Just my opinion though. I have a AN4 feed and a 1" diameter drain. (yeah 1" diameter). No smoking ever.

I did the opposite of you; i have the greddy kit, which was originally installed by a shop to have the feed line (not sure what the size of it is, but it looks pretty big) going directly to a tee on the back of the block. Well I recently took it apart and re-did it with a length of -3 hose (20 inches i believe) going to a tee (aluminum ). I've had an autometer pressure gauge in there the whole time, and it now reaches pressures of 50psi when driving around instead of 75psi the way it was originally set up.

I didn't have any smoking either way btw..

www.anplumbing.com

Go to the brake hoses section...they've got many different lengths.

Good thought, but I don't think so. Here's my reasoning:

I use an -8 for oil return

-8 is 1/2" and all oil drain flanges for T3 cartridges are tapped for no larger than 1/2"

I feel that putting a hose, such as -10 on a fitting that is smaller (1/2" where -10 is 5/8") would be the same as using a restrictor. you're still only draining as much oil as will fit thru the 1/2" hole right?

DSM cars use -8 all day long with bigger turbos than I have (AND they use -4 for feed most of the time!).

I asked Majestic Turbo, who seems to know a bit about turbos, and they said -8 is fine.

Just my thoughts...

Oh yeah, and it only happens when it's cold, i.e. the oil is thin..

Funny I always thought oil got "thinner" as it heated up.

I might be wrong (not really) but when oil is cold, it's thicker. Thicker oil takes longer to pump thru a dry engine. So, you use say 10W30. The oil starts off at 10 weight, which is lighter, so if it's cold, it's quicker to pump thru the motor and lube it up. Once it warms, it "turns" into 30 wieght which is heavier (thicker).

Long story short..

Also, what I meant when I said "it only happends when it's cold" is I meant that it only happens when the motor is first started in the morning, not that it's actually chilly ***** outside.

Got it from Baker Precision (unfortunately) they were the only place I saw that had everything I needed at a decent price. ANplumbing.com might have this stuff but their descriptions of parts are vague at best. I think they didn't have the 90 degree fitting there. I posted some pics of the new feed before installing it..I will take some of the whole thing in the car soon..

No, because the ID of the 1/2" to -10 is larger than just a 1/2" to -8. The thread on the -8 and 1/2" is the same, but not the ID.
