Does anyone know what would cause the trans case not to fit correctly. we nver pulled the gears out so i know there in all the way. the only thing i can think of is the bearings not seating correctly.

place transmission on two 2x4's so its not resting on the mainshaft

spread the C clip, while tightenin down 4 bolts...one on each corner

the case doesn't sit low enough for the c clip to be cousing the problem.

it's a real bitch to get back on. i ended up using needle nose pliers instead of the ring clip ones.

then part #3 is probably not lining up with the hole on the gear side case

got to get that part to line up, try putting it in a different gear

You have to mess with the shift selector to get the case to fit back on. Also make sure that the tab on top of the mainshaft is lined up correctly with the case. Once the case is on and bolted down, you'll need to get that snap ring back in place... you can usually just turn the tranny upside down and the countershaft will slide up and the ring will snap onto it and hold it.

The C clip is causing your problem. Expand it and the casing will slide down.

i'd say something, but both issues have been covered. take the top half off and make sure the rod in the shift mechanism is all the way into the hole beneath, and make sure you do like somebody said and tighten a few bolts down while having a friend expand the C-clip. unless you're somewhat talented, you'll need a friend.
