cage plate pics...will these pass tech???
hey guys
i welded these into a car, and i am going to be putting a 10pt cage into another car and i was wondering if i did the rear plates like this again if it would pass tech at all venues. i did it this way because there wasnt a flat place to mount the 6x6 plates. any help would be appreciated, sorry for the poor pics.

According to the SCCA you have to have the mounting plates with a given radius from the cage tube. From the pictures, it doesnt look like that it would fly at an event. If I remember correctly, last time I checked, it was a 3" radius from the mounting points.
Are you ARC welding?

Mounting plates need to be 6"x6" uncut mild steel or chromoly. If you need to mount on an uneven surface you will have to bend and shape the plates to fit.

the cage was purchased from S&W, so everything is manufactured to spec. a guy that has been doing cages since the 70's emailed me and said he has done many cages with the places notched and welded like that and said that it shouldnt be a problem....we will see i guess. this is a street car and makes it to the track occasionally, and i dont think any local tracks will make a deal about it. just wanted to be sure the next one is correct.

For SCCA and NASA (and I'm sure others) ERW tubing is not allowed anymore. It used to be allowed however if .095" wall was spec'd for DOM you would have to use .120" with ERW. But that's now gone, DOM only.
Alot of dirt tracks don't even care so people will use the ERW.
So the above cage is illegal for HC or SCCA.

Also, for SCCA spec the front down tubes can only have 2 bends in them and the main hoop can only have 4(totaling 180 deg.)
Im starting cage fabrication myself, lots of politics... haha, but its for good reason. Peoples lives are at stake here!!!!!!!
Also, the diagram of the cage above is a drag race cage. It would not be any good for SCCA or NASA.
