Default Tire recommendation for a DD/track car

i DD my 93 hatch 70 miles a day, and take it out to the drag strip (or atleast plan on it once its running again) maybe about 2 times a month.

right now i have dunlop Direzza101 up front in 195-55-15, and Dunlop FM901 195-55-15 in the rear, which suck Theyre all in 'decent' condition, but dont grip as well as i'd like.

i was thinking about Azenis 615 since i might be able to get them pretty cheap, but the tread wear is freakin me out. OR is there a pretty good pair of like 14" tires i could swap out every track day, and keep the Dunlops or something.

Are you saying that you have an extra set of 14" wheels for your car? If so, you can get a pair of the Azenis in 195/60-14 and swap them on at the dragstrip, and the rest of the time keep using longer-lasting tires like the ones you already have.

I have a few steelies laying around, and I believe 2 fit my car, so I might do that. Since they might be dragstrip tires, is there any other tire I should consider besides the azenis like the bfg dragradial, or would those hold up? I can maybe spend around $180 for 2 tires, idk if those fall under that price range.

You can definitely get two 195/60/14 Azenis for $180.

The BFGs not so much I don't think just by searching a little bit.

The BFG Drag Radial is available in 205/50-14. They're $117 apiece at the Tire Rack. (By comparison, the Azenis in 195/60-14 is $66 at Vulcan Tire.) Drag radials are a better choice for the dragstrip; they are designed to allow the sidewalls to deform when you let air out of them to increase the size of the contact patch. Obviously, they're more money, but you're only buying two and you're only buying them once, since they'll last you for years. Your choice.

i might be able to find some used one with plenty of tread pretty cheap. ill look around on craigslist, and maybe ebay. about a month ago, i saw a 2 guys with a hatch, and a gsr that had some nitto (street?) tires, and they were hooking up pretty well... someone told me about 555r (??) or something like that. i also heard the proxies4 are good too.

also, once i do replace my dunlops, is there any cheap tires thatll handle pretty well around corners? my DZ101s do it fairly well, and theyre like 60-70 a tire, so i might stick with these.

Yes, Nitto makes the NT555R, their drag radial for the dragstrip (don't confuse it with their NT555RII road racing tire). The only 14" size it comes in is 205/55-14; I'm not sure whether that will rub on your car, as it's 1 percent larger in diameter than stock.

The Toyo Proxes 4 is an all-season tire, a street tire intended for people who need to use the same tires in snow as in moderate to warm temperatures. In your climate, it performs much worse than your current DZ101 summer tires.

The Yokohama S.drive is better than the DZ101 for about the same price.

Also, when you replace your tires, on your car you should be using 195/50-15, not 195/55-15.

i have a bad enough rubbing problem with my current tires, but i could always raise up the coilovers

really? wow, my brother used them in a road racing event, and he said they hooked up great, but i imagine he didnt push his car to the limit... he has a 96 impala. hasnt done any drag racing with them, though.

That's another all-season. Didn't they discontinue those a while ago?

No. He already admitted that he was confused. The Sumitomo HTR Z is a really old and really crappy summer tire, offering considerably worse performance than your crappy old FM901 or your newer DZ101. Don't do it.

A nice affordable track tire right now is probably the Falken RT615's. From here on.... the prices get a little expensive. Hankook RS2, Dunlop Z1 Star Spec, Toyo R1R, Bridgestone RE01R.

The Star Spec is priced similar to the Azenis in most sizes.

The RS-2 Z212 has been discontinued; its RS-3 Z222 replacement will be available early next year.

The Kumho XS was introduced recently.

Note that all of these are street tires that are sticky enough to be used on the track, not to be confused with R compound track tires.
