You can only have a Seqential Forward /backward shift, gearbox H pattern will never work and in racing they use electric solenoids like this : http://www.quickshifter.net/buttonshifter4.htm
ideas....
For a simple non-sequential system to prevent mis shifts a simple ratchet system could be used. Unfortunatly you would have to release the ratchets to downshift.
For the clutch, everyone is looking at it wrong. What you need to do is operate the hydraulics, not the clutch lever. A ABS type system could be used with variable valveing for smooth/rough clutch engagement.
For a true sequential system you could use something with 4 drums, 2 rotating, 2 fixed. Picture it one pair at a time. You have a fixed drum that the cable is atatched to, and one that the lever is atatched to. The rotating drum has the shift pattern for either l-r or f-b cut into its surface. as it rotates against the other drum it is forced in and out, moving the cable. Then a simple bearing system would be used to ratchet back to center. The same could be done with a single drum with two patterns cut into it that levers operating the cables work through.
These could be aplied to even lever shift trans missions useing a similar system as is used when putting a b18c into an elise.
