Default radiator mods

hey guys id like to know if anyone here has ever made and custom radiators?

I have a ef sedan that is boosted and id like to take my 92-95 civic half rad and flip it sideways under the rad cross member. The rad is alumunum 2 core and id be making new end tanks.

1: Does it matter if the inlet and outlet are on the same tank?
2: Would I need to divide the tank the inlet and outlet are on, making a dual pass rad?
3: What side should the cap be located on? the opposite side of the inlet/outlet

thanks in advance

Hi buddy,

I make aluminium radiators for a living, so I'll do my best to answer for you.

1) There's absolutly no issues with having inlet and outlet on the same tank, ASLONG as it's baffled.. You want little to no bypass otherwise you lose the cooling effect of the core.

2) See above

3) Cap can be anywhere in the system, I try to shy away from putting a cap/filler above an inlet pipe to the radiator as the water coming out of the pipe can have a tendancy to act as "pressure" and trip the cap to lift releasing coolant.

Let me know if you need any advice, I've built hundreds of radiators, have a few pics of my stuff, too.

thanks for the replys guys!

salival i might take you up on that offer in time im just poking around to get some ideas on which way will work best for my app. what can i do to get around the rad cap being on the same side as the inlets. Im doing this to fit a 3' DP and top mounts in better so the drivers side is really tight..

C5R thats exactly what i wanna do thanks for the link

Im sure everyone knows how tight a ef engine bay is but here is what im tring to clear up with the relocation. note the down pipe is less than 1/4 inch off rad face.

I make these...they tuck under the core support and still allow room for intercoolers...great for big turbos.

Do you have a bleeder somewhere on those tanks? It seems like the top several rows could trap a lot of air with the outlet not being all the way at the top.

The flow of coolant will push the air through. That's not an issue, but you will need to have an expansion take that will be able to bleed the air.

d16sandrail: That, sir, is bad ***! The dual pass should do rather well. I like it. Where did you get the core from?

Thanks :-)

My radiator is a crossflow core and dual pass design, meaning the coolant passes through the core twice before re-entering the engine. The dual pass design is proven to lower coolant temps by 20-40 degrees over the conventional type radiator. My tube and fin section of the core has roughly 99 more cubic inches than a "EBAY 1/2 size dual core", and my coolant reseviors hold close to twice the coolant volume. The radiator is situated under the core support, and entirely in the path of the in coming air entering the bumper, so it should do very well ;-) The radiator in the pics has #20 -an fittings, but I can build them with standard hose ends for OEM style rubber hoses as well. I know that the guy who started this thread has a EF, I am currently fabbing one of these for a EF and it fits perfectly in withing the core support with out cutting anything ;-) This is ideal for K swapped EF's where there is literally no room for a decent size radiator.

update! At this time I am still gathering info, and about to move my car from storage home where i can tinker around. As a first attempt im going to remove the lower portion of my rad saddle, I have made a replica of my rad to be used for test fitting and checking my wastegate clearance. I have also decided its best to make a over flow tank with a rad cap instead of trying to tuck a cap under the core. ill have a few pics to post hopefully by this weekend so ill be sure to upload them.

Absolutly, I can make it for a DA, this type of radiator is very well suited for DA, EF, and CB's where clearances are pretty tight between the engine and radiator. PM me for pricing and more info.

For ballers on a budget.

Remember guys, just because you own a civic does not mean you need to use a Civic radiator. Take some measurements and get something that fits/works for you. That statement isn't directed towards anyone in general, just something I've noticed people have a hard time understanding.

UPDATE! I got the car moved from storage to a good friends garage on saturday. Managed to get quite a bit of stuff done. Its really nice tohave heat and good tools to work with. So far ive cut the lower portion of the rad support and done some minor trimming around the pass side head light. I have my rad flipped on the side in order to take measurements and make sure there is clearance for my wastegate elbow. I have measured and got sizing for my new endtanks and will update later today with some progress pics.

more pics and updates to come!

I build them for K Swaps also (inlets and oulets on the drivers side). Basicly tell me what you want I make it happen, -AN fittings, inline filler locations, on the radiator filler location, on the inlet housing to the motor filler location. I do custom fab work, so you get it however you order it. PM me for pricing and details.
