Question About Tapping
Hey,
Ok, so this pic below is the broken piece of the inside of my tranny casing. What is supposed to thread in there is the pivot ball for the clutch fork.

Right now the tranny is at a welder and he's using filler to make a mound. I am going to have to drill and tap it.
My question is: with my regular tap set, I have the thing with the two handles that you twist which turns the tap bolt thing. I can't use this becuase of the tight space, the long handle arms will not clear the tranny casing walls.
So I need something long to attach the tap rod thing to. What should I use. I'm NOT going to use a drill because I need something that I can turn with my hands slowly.
Any ideas?

DO NOT USE A RATCHET. When tapping, you need pressure on both sides of the tap while turning. Using a ratchet only puts pressure on one side of the tap, and you WILL NOT get a straight tapped hole. It will be all wobbly, especially since its aluminum. I know from prior experience.
Id would say use the long shank tap as mentioned before, if you are stuck on not using a drill. I personally would use a drill just because you will get a much more precise thread over doing it by hand, but thats your choice.
GOOD LUCK!
Kyle

Hey guys,
Thanks for all your responses.
I'm tapping with a 1/2x20. Yeah, the top part is like a square top.
I'll try and find a shank tap.
I don't want to use my drill because I can't vary the speed of it. I tried using the drill on some other tap and I completely fucked up cause the rpm speed was just too fast for me to control the angle.
I got the tranny back from the welder. Pics up in an hour after I go after a shank.

One more thing: When I drill my hole, do I go one size under the tap? Like, I'm tapping with a 1/2x20, so I drill with a 3/8 bit?

no offence.. but these questions tell me that you probably shouldn't be doing this yourself. i suggest you ask someone to show you how to do this first..

^^ this is the tap/drill chart that i usually use.
You are going to need a "bottoming tap"...
Good luck.

That includes teaching myself how to weld, fabbing up my exhaust, doing my first swap in my garage (k24a2 into EG), clutch install, etc etc. I just dont' have alot of experience...gimmie a break.

NO!!!! Definitely not!!! You need to reference a drill/tap chart to find out what size to drill it.
This chart in the link below says that for a 1/2-13 bolt, you drill the hole to 27/64 (.4219").
