New Welding Thread!
it seemed like it pulled some oil or other crap from the inside of the case as it was being welded....i didnt pull it apart

very professional indeed..
as for an inhert purge, what about the flux they sell on burns stainless, how well does that work for a back purge?
edit: here are some pictures of my stuff. Very new to welding, i have appx. 20 hours total with different welding methods (mainly stick practice)
Here is a picture of some old guy mouthing off saying he was a good welder... 2 and 1/2 hours later he finally patched the hole in the exhaust. And he managed to do it without turning the gas on!

Here is my manifold for my geo all tacked togeather, this is the first project ever taken on doing any sort of fabrication at all. 100% made and cut with a torch, grinder, and mig/tig welding and a drill... No CNC cut flanges here! heh

Here is a close-up of one of the TIG welds on the runners...

This is where i do welding and misc. crap. For installing parts i have a seperate shop that i use which makes it nice.

here is a picture of the manifold/turbo setup installed on the engine.

whats the technique for cross stitch welding? I have never seen this untill now. Im pretty new to tig so i dont think that i can perform this just yet, but I would love to learn if someone wouldnt mind shareing their technique with me.
thanks
Rob
thanks

its interesting you bring that up i was talking to a friend the other night about that, of course you can purchase that stuff anywhere, (burns just marks it up a ton) but im interested in how well it works... kind of interesting for sure, but very difficult to really get inside of most of the stuff we weld.
focus the tungsten on one portion let off move it to focuse on the other side but add rod to the void of the puddle, not the surface that is being welded. its basically a zigzag of the torch, but add the rod in a line.
ive come close to making decent cross stich welds, jon laid a perfect cross stitch on his first attempt. the kid is a freak.

well i was thinking that it would come with a sort of swab, like you get for PVC pipe glue, then it would be very nice to use.
I've tried using SOLDER FLUX as a replacement to a argon purge... and it seems to work untill things get really hot, then it likes to just drip off the peice.
Boy i wish i had some argon and some stainless to go practice.... Can't afford argon

ewwwwwwwwww haha i can only imagine what that must be like. you can do it with helium too... go rob a birthday party for some balloons and try it out
******** in hoping that this thread stays clean, i want to say thanks to the guy who taught me all about metallurgy and welding. He is struggling with serious health issues right now and i hope we dont lose him. He is one of my major inspirations and a great person all around. sixtydashone knows him too, but were lookin out for you gary*************

just dont let it drip on your lap and you will be ok. LOL
for helium... I have some friends that work at a party store, but i dont have a good enough storage container for it... dont think i can hook baloons up to the tig torch and have enough purge time to get anything done!

i meant purge the tube you are wedling with the balloon, but youre gonna need argon in the torch, unless you can hook a balloon up to a regulator haha
if ti reacts like stainless almost, how does inconel react? i dont know many who have even seen inconel, and no, its not colonel sanders byproduct to original.

WOW thats crazy, on his first shot at it!
Well it doesnt sound to hard, so basically focus the heat on one side then move it to another side and fill where you just took the heat off of?

Honestly, what happened to the oilpan? Is the oil pan aluminum?
I am shopping around trying to find myself a used welder, you guys have any suggestions where I could look besides ebay and my local newspaper classifieds? I was looking into getting a lincoln or a miller mig welder and go from there. My roomate is taking a welding class (I chose to take the tuning class instead), so I hope he can show me some stuff. I just need to weld things like my exhaust, IC piping, and the oilpan.

SWEET.... new thread w/ out all the drama LOL
Lets try to make this a tread for all technical debate about welding ect, at the same time make it newbie friendly.. I mean i was reading through all the post and some of those words I was like "WTF does that mean" OK here are my questions.
1) what are the NORMAL types of welds.. tig, mig, cross-welding? robots?
2) which type are most commonly used for header, turbo manifolds, custome piping ect?
3) which are stronger better lasting welds? tig or mig?
4) how do shops NORMALLY charge? hour/labor, per weld length size, overal project cost, material usage?
5) What should i look for in the local pages for a good welder shop to work on custome piping, honda aluminm tranny cases, ect? what should I ask for to find out if they are qaulifyed?
6) How do welder see what the **** is going on behind that feaken mask? is the glass specail or somthing that allows them to see beyond the freaken bight *** light?
LOL
7) when your welding somthing together.... stop to look if it looks ok. If you want to start over... what happends? do you break it off where you messed up? cut it off, sand it down, re-clean the surface, throw it away and start all over?
8) are there different types of welding material ( sticks, beads, ect)
9) if welds are good and they are made to hold up... how come manifolds crack? even though it's less than 50lb applyed to that surace? ex....external WG arms.
10) WFT does all that welding termonogly mean... give me a rundown of what normal words are used in the welding community to that i can atleast try to understand what you pros are talking about. LOL
thanks guys. WELDING info for the newbies 101
