Default intercooler project

whats up yall i got a idea that could make some power if you live in texas. Im enrolled in HVAC school right now which is where they teach you how to work on Ac's stuff like that. What im going to do for a class project is make an intercooler that uses the air conditioning system from the car to cool the air passing through. I believe the intercooler will be filled with about 80% water 20% antifreeze cuz water is the best coolant. I will be trying to make a silinoide valve that with a switch will cut the freon into the evaporator and into the intercooler. Its going to require alot of custom stuff and time and money, but im gonna see if I can get this to make some power. It should work very similiar to an air to water intercooler but will be front mounted, sealed of with the copper lines running through it for the heat transfer. Anyways, get back, tell me what yall think

Seeing as how you'd have to have the AC compressor running for that to work, it may not be worth the trouble. Much of the power you'd gain by cooling the intercooler in that fashion would be sapped by having to run the compressor to get it.

well what can u feel a bigger difference in a freezing cool day or a hot day with the ac on? Everyone thinks that these things draw so much power when it is only a few horspower. You dont think that getting an intercooler to chill down to below zero will make more power than what a compressor will drawing? ill keep yall updated

this is a really kool idea, wont you have to have like "2 heat exchangers tho, one to cool the freon back down?"

I've done this on a dyno. Lost 25 horses with the A/C running. (WOT cutout bypassed) I'd say that's more than a few.

id have to see that on the dyno. These spiral compressors use the least amount of power to run that most. Piston style compressors use alot of energy. But as the 2nd heat exchanger, hopefully this would be able to use the same condensor, to remove the heat from freon. But I was talking to me professor and he said that the system would be very delicate and might need its own condensor... so id have to find some more room. I was thinking about an actual compressor motor to spin a compressor, so that there would be no lost horspeower. one problem is finding one that doesnt draw 600 amps.... lol this would be awesome to find a powerful motor to run this on 12V 1 phase.

I am also in HVAC for my Marine Corps job and i woudl liek to comment on this project. First it sounds liek a good idea. as far as the compressor killign your HP... that may be true at low RPMs but i honestly dont think it hurts all that bad at high RPMs. But i have not seem the numbers on the dyno... Second the way A/ C works is you have a condensor and a evaporator. In order to have the outside be "cold" you would have to run your compressor backwards and also if you figure all that out you will have to have a way to remove the heat from the refrigerant and if you ran the stock evaporator that woudl mean your heating the inside of yoru car. Not that it matters but sucks if its a hot day. thats my thoughts.. you may have already thought about those things though.

I'm pretty sure ford has done this something like this with their supercharged truck engines in the harley davidson editions.

well it sounds more like im going to have to run an secondary system ne way. it would be nice if it was electric driven. And yes the 06 ford lightenings have this technology on them, so there is a way to make power from this.
