your right. i stated that i didnt read all the posts.
i wouldnt say "i dont approve."
but i will say there are huge holes in your plan, and take that as you will, im not trying to flame.
as an engineering student, in my opinion there are many things i would/could not have learned outside of the classroom.

Let me start with everyone is different. I have always been a fast, self taught learner. Now don't get me wrong, I do plan on taking up some serious mechanical engineering study before I take on this challange. I do appreciate your honesty though. Of course there are a good number of holes in the plan. Obviously the bottom end will need to be almost 100% custom. I'm talking crank, rods and all. Then it comes down to how do I offset the cylinders. Do I have it:
_______________
|_|C| |C| |C| |C| |
|C| |C| |C| |C| |_|
This **** I will figure out. It is a little hard since I haven't started doing all the CAD **** because I don't have measurements on heads and clutch housings of trannys. All this will come with time.
I' don't feel this post of your is a flame in any sense, maskednegator
however needs to get a life and post something worthwhile as opposed to flame. But seriously guys don't get pissed, it's only an idea, my idea, if you don't like it leave.

Brian I'm only in the R&D phase. I was actually sick of telling Newbs how to jump their service check connector so I posted a topic I knew would get some good flame and discussion (hence the bland yet curious title). It has kept me rather entertained over the last 15 hours or so.
i just dont understand where u are going to be able to build i would say at least 5 motors for R&D to figure out what works well because your first motor will probally blow up the second might run but crappy there is alot of trial and error with building a motor like that even people who do it for a living dont build the first one and are like there lets put that in the new enzo.

And just a little before you were saying "**** degrees blah blah blah sociological approval bullshit bullshit bullshit."
I think you should really rethink the cost of this before planning any further. Are you thinking about having the block cast/machined? Do you have any idea the cost associated with having a casting of that size done? It'd be easier to make a custom block like the billet one Bob Norwood (I believe) made, but then you're talking about a lot of machining time. That was only a 4 cylinder too.
Why not just stuff an NSX engine under the hood of a Civic with a custom 6 speed transmission, turbo it and make it RWD?

The cost of making a custom block.... geez...
Sounds like your trying to make one of those new Caddy engines (?). Don't they make DOHC V8's that can put down an ungodly amount of finely tuned power.
Maybe I just dreamt that.

I have considered the NSX drivetrain, I know it is possible but I would much rather do the V8. It's more ballsy and custom.
Yeah taking classes and thinking a degree will actually equate to anything more than a cubicle job are two different things, I mentioned how I thrive on knowledge...
The block would be forged and then machined. As I also mentioned earlier in the post I have had some time in machining and have contacts in the business still. I'm not too worried about the costs. There are other issues I will need to deal with. If I can figure it all out then I can worry about the costs involved in creating it. The reason I'm not too hyped about the NSX drivetrain is the civic would have to be transformed into mid engine. I was considering chopping up the front of the car to make it a FWD beast but with the power it will put out I believe RWD or AWD is the only way to go. I was gonna look in to the SH-AWD drivetrain. **** eventhough it's auto it would be phatty on the K62A-RiII. Or whatever the **** I'm gonna call it. Or even a beefed up S2000 drive-train would work, then I wouldn't have to do the mid-engine conversion...

Yeah, everyone I know with a degree ends up working in a cubicle.

Is this a joke?
Either way, why use a civic shell? Why not get a shell from a RWD car and have it powered by honda
That would be even better, when you smoke the guy in the chevelle and pop the hood of your camaro to reveal the honda power. Hah!

So I wrote to Allen Millyard, the gentleman who build V8 and V12 motorcycles in England. Just to see if he had any input on this subject. He is the pro IMO...
OMG you are budgeting $350,000 to build a civic....bwahahahaha
I don't think you understand the type of task you are taking on. What other things have you designed or even built through autocad that you can show for yourself?
In the end your going to be out $350k with nothing to show for it but a pile of scrap metal, when you could have been driving around in a supercar.
