a little cheaper here, and theyll let you purchase a kit with one alum flange and one steel flange if thats what you want to do.

I wouldn't be so much worried about that so much as the welds. I'm not the greatest welding by any means. Personally I'd feel comfortable experimenting with it but then you have to make flanges and what not. Seems like more work in the long run.
Aluminum has a tendency if not welded properly to show signs of stress cracking.
A cylinder head's aluminum is how thick? Umm... thicker than 1/16" of an inch I think. I also don't remember when the last time I welded on my head either.
