Default transmission code and gearing education (civic 92-2000)

i have 2 transmissions. both are labeled as s20/p20. the difference is the CX(d15b8) transmission is labeled j8f, and the si(d16z6) transmission is labled y4b. i see no a000 or b000 on the transmissions. questioning gearing and other options for later.

There is a small circle cast in the main case by the fill plug about the size of a penny. In the circle it will be cast with P20/A00 for the 92-95 CX/VX or DX/LX with 35mm diff bearings. The EX/Si will be cast P20/B00 with 40mm diff bearings. There are 3 different Gear ratios for the USDM 92-95 S20 transmission. CX/VX - DX/LX - and EX/Si. The J8F CX has the longest ratio with a 3.25 FD and the Y4B Si has the shortest 4.25 FD.

thankyou. i was looking at you guys transmissions about a week ago. just picked up a complete swap and was questioning gearing for autocross.

do you guys have any experience with the phantom grip installed and advantages over an lsd other than the price. the biggest question is do they work?

We do not use the Phantom Grip in our builds. I would suggest going with a real LSD. It may cost a bit more but it is well worth it for the better part and performance.

rebuld. syncrotech can hook you up with a good rebuilt. your trans is near the same as a dx. so it may be cheaper just to swap in a used dx trans, as they are a dime a dozen.

Okay, to revisit this topic, i now have a P20 b000 transmission with a 24e lsd. i was looking at different fluids and questioned if the lsd required a bit thicker fluid.

Do you have any pics of the LSD? It is probably a viscous LSD. The viscous and helical LSDs do not require special oil but the clutch type LSD does.

S20 on the label, P20 on the casting. Just Honda's way on confusing people.

About 2.5 quarts Honda MTF or 10W30 oil for daily use. Fill it until it runs out of the fill hole.

i looked it up in my hatnes 84 to 91 civic manual. didnt give an exact capacity. i put 2 quarts sae 10w30 royal purple.

the trans seems buttery smooth, 4th gear isnt even broke in yet.

I'd get that Barney junk out at next engine oil change.

What do you mean 4th gear isn't broke in yet?

4th gear has a great engagement. no slop or play what so ever. feels like a new transmission.

as far as the barney junk, in comparison, royal purple has the most Ppm of zink additive than any other Sae motor oil. Not even the moto guys have that high of a concentration. the only ones that do have this is thicker diesel oils like rotella from shell. this is because the rotational assembly just needs the oil to stick to more and for longer for protection. this is why, as well, there was a big changeover in mtf, oil, and other petroleum products with zink additives in 1974, 1986, and 1995.

what is the problem with the oil in my transmission?

10w30 is all you need for a DD tranny.

I sometimes do gm syncromesh mixed with honda mtf or just straight mtf
