Default Tranny Problem

On my 5 speed manual, there is a problem. There seems to be a grinding noise whenever my foot is not on the gas. If I am driving, and just take my foot off, the car will jerk, and than you can hear the grinding.
What could this be? If it matters, the car is a 96, all stock.

push in the clutch and see if it goes away.

If it does, possibly one of the mainshaft bearings.

Yeah, it goes away when I press in the clutch.
I took it to a shop a while ago and dont remember what they said.
I am probably going to take it to a transmission specialist and see what they say and go from there.
If it is just a bearing, would it be an easy fix?

easy fix for a person familiar with the inside of a manual trans. If you have pretty good mechanical ability, you would be alright repairing yourself

I would say I have decent mechanical ability, but never dealt with anything on a car that is mechanical.
