I own a 1986 Bertone (Fiat) X1/9. For those that don't know, its a mid-engine layout with the drivetrain of a front wheel drive car placed behind the driver.

The current powerplant is a 1500cc SOHC (~85hp) running through a 5 speed gearbox. I've been doing some research on swapping to a more powerful, modern engine, and have decided to look into hondas because of their light, compact, and reliable motors.

I have very little experience with Hondas so I decided to ask around here to get some advice.
So far, I've seen someone else swap a JDM B16A with a Y21 trans (from an EG Civic SIR) into their X1/9 with very good results. However, I'm guessing that the cost of importing a donor vehicle would be to high for me.

What are some alternatives that would be easier to come by? Some of the options I've heard of are a B18, a K20, or a B20 from a CRV with a Vtec head.

The main things I'm looking for in a swap are a light engine/trans, relatively high power output, hydro clutch, and small enough to fit in the engine bay. I'm open to any advice/suggestions, and appreciate the help.
