B16 transmission weird ratios. Trans guru step on in!
alright, i bought a "broken" b16 trans for $20 dollar. thought i'd give it a go for only 20 bucks. Tore it all apart and once i counted up the teeth on 5th gearing, the ratio came out to be 0.906. tooth count was 29 and 32 for the 5th main and counter gears.
29 divided by 32 = 0.906. I have counted over and over and still come up with the same numbers. My Final drive is also 4.400
Now i looked online and found that the Y1 5th ratio is 0.870 with a FD of 4.266 and the S1/J1 is 0.848 with a FD of 4.400
The trans i bought has no label. sticker is long gone. The seller didnt know much of it except that he was told it was a B16.
What i want to know is what transmission do i have? code wise.
Its a Cable transmission. with 4.4 FD and a very short 5th gear.
Pics for the non-believers (start the counts at the red line)

Re: B16 transmission weird ratios. Trans guru step on in!
2nd gear 19/39 = 2.052
3rd gear 24/34 = 1.416
4th gear 29/32 = 1.034
5th gear 32/29 = 0.906
actually looking at fourth and fifth, maybe some one had a spare 4th gear set and mixed it in? possible to have the main shaft gears onto the counter side?
seems like a Y1 but with a 4.4 final drive.

4th is a 98+ Integra Spec R/USDM GSR/JDM SiR-G
5th I am going to guess it is custom, because the closest to that from Honda is a .909 for the Single cam Del Sol/JDM ZC dohc 4th gear.

Re: B16 transmission weird ratios. Trans guru step on in!
Unfortunately there are some gear ratio charts posted online with some incorrect information. Gears must be indentified by more than just the ratio. Hydro gears and D series gears will not fit in an early cable transmission. The splines, synchro size and tooth profiles are different. I have verified the tooth count and gear ID markings from several builds and cores over the years.
It is an 89-91 Integra XSi JDM B16 S1 or J1. If 3/4/5 synchros are all the same diameter it is an S1 but if 3/4 are larger than 5 it is a J1. I can't see the 3/4 hub with the slider in the 3rd position but the hub will have a "U" lock on the J1 3rd gear side and the S1 will not have a lock.
RATIO: S1/J1
4.40
F/D:66X15
C/S
1) 39
2) 39
3) 34
4) 32
5) 29
M/S
1) 12
2) 19
3) 24
4) 29
5) 32
RATIO
1)3.230
2)2.052
3)1.416
4)1.103
5) .906

Had the SAME thing a few years back! Hahah! I definitely thought it was strange as well which is why I'd asked.

2 = 39/19 = 2.052631578947368
3 = 34/24 = 1.416666666666667
4 = 32/29 = 1.103448275862069

30/29 is 1.03448275862069
You must be doing banker or housewife math. Cause numbers are disappearing without any explanation.
