Default B16 Cable Trans LSD

Okay, I searched, and I am a little confused. Mostly because someone posted that LS and B16 trans use the same internals. And then everything else I found said something else.

I have a 1st Gen OBD0 B16A. It came with a factory trans (Y1? I will check later) trans with no LSD. Looking to put a LSD in there if possible. If it is too hard, I guess I'll try and find a new trans. But this one is pretty nice. No shift issues, no grinds/pops.

I just want to know which LSD I need to find/source to put in here. Aftermarket is prefered, but if it's not something that is common, let me know.

If the Ring Gear on your '89 B16 LSD Has more than 10 bolt holes It won't fit anything else either, as far as I know?
The early Y1 and S1 Boxes had 12 bolt holes on the Ring gear.

This makes me think it's an oddball trans.

But I can get it shimmed and use a different LSD?

I know zip about transmissions. But it's time to learn since it's pretty dang important now that my car is less than stock.

They are the helical? Not the clutch type, right? The car is mostly straight line racing and DD.

Yes they are helical. Consult them before purchasing and ask them all your questions, they will get you sorted out. You can also call or email Quaife, both are great products and both are helical.
Whoever said that an LS and B16 trans have the same internals is just goofy in the head. Maybe they were thinking about how the USDM typeR and B16 trans have the same gear ratios. Who really knows?
If you want to do the install yourself, Evans tuning has a multi-video youtube tutorial on the subject, here is Part 1

I heard about evans tuning and that video. Still not sure if I want to do it myself. I guess I may have the skill.

I just also knew that my trans was weird per say. I will call quaife or Mfactory after I get under my hood and make sure which trans I have. It's been pouring rain and I just don't want to go outside.

But thanks. I was actually hoping to get more information on the cheaper LSDs out there, like OBX. I have read mixed things on OBX. But it doesn't matter if they don't make a diff for my trans.

OBX diffs are just fine so hopefully they have one to fit your needs. I know in the past some folks had issues with some of the hardware OBX used on their LSDs. There are write-ups on how to upgrade the hardware on HT. It is pretty much a copy of the Quaife.
Good luck. I love my LSD, it makes a big difference IMO.

I don't want to say I'm a cheapo, but I'm not really pushing the limits of anything. <300 whp, more like 250. Looking to do rods/pistons and shoot for 400 at the track. Even then, I don't think I'll be putting as much strain on it as some of the hardcore guys do.

If you like your LSD filled with pieces of wood, or the gear faces have pits in them, or the runout is so bad you can see the wobble, by all means by a junk OBX.

We now have a refugee program and offer a discount on an MFactory LSD with the trade in of a broken OBX LSD. We did this to help those who spent their money on one and then learned the hard way that they chose wrong.

Now I just have to figure out what to do with all these broken OBX LSDs? Maybe an extra large paper weight, door stop, or possible a boat anchor? I am open for suggestions.

I was reading around. haha. I'll probably stray away from OBX and OEM. Looking for MFactory or Quaife. No offense or disrepsect to either company, but I am probably in the market for a used/bnib/discounted piece due to price point. But maybe later this summer I can spring for a new one.

My last statement thinking the OBX may work was due entirely to my preconcieved notion that the diff took a large amount of strain and that maybe people were going past its limits.

I saw the Mfactory refugee program, literally laughed out loud. Really made me question OBX. But they also accept Exedy clutches and such, so I questioned it a little. I think it's mostly a system to get people to buy their stuff.

But I am talking to MFactory on HT and I will probably call Quaife. The helical LSD is what I am after. The clutch type seems like it has it's benefits, but none that I plan on using regularly.
