Y8 + Z6
Ok, to begin with, I did a search, but not much came up.
Ayways, my question is: What are the differences between the D16Y8 + D16Z6 engines? I know that the intake manifolds are a little different, (The Y8 is better there), and I heard something about the combustion chambers and the camshaft being different...? Are the valvesprings the same strength? which engine is happier to rev high? What other differences are there?
Thanks

here's the info on both of those engines logged in my brain.
The Z6 head is like a mini version of a B16A head, in terms of the combustion chamber.
The Y8 head is like a mini version of a GSR/P72 head, in terms of the combustion chamber. (you'll get higher compression with this head).
I've heard from numerous road race/auto-x people that say the Z6 block is better than the Y8 block in terms of longevity. The Y8 has crappy crank/rod bearings or something of that nature.
Both use the same stock headgasket which is metal.
Not sure about the camshafts...I'm pretty they're close in spec. But ...Skunk2 is coming out with a SOHC VTEC camshaft, should be worthy of getting.
Valvetrain I believe is the same between the Z6 & Y8 heads.
Intake manifolds do differ of course, visually. Although I hear the Z6 manifold is actually better than the Y8.....but that might be debateable.
Both Y8/Z6 have the same transmission gear ratio.
The ideal setup with both of these motors is to actually mix the parts up.
Slap the Y8 head on a Z6 block; use the Y8 manifold; use either transmission--although the ideal transmission is the JDM EG/VTi transmission which is the same exact transmission, but has a factory LSD (they're kinda hard to locate). Run a lightened f.wheel while your at it (you can never go wrong with a lightend f.wheel!). Get an adjustable camsprocket and some worthy aftermarket camshaft and get the ecu reprogrammed (obd1 is suggested).
That's all i can think of right now. I'm sure there's some others on here that can help you too..such as Mista Bone(r).

Wow. damn mang, thanks for the info! I've also heard that the A6/Z6's are better blocks. Do you happen to know why the Z6 seems to have a higher redline (stock)? I've noticed 92-95 Z6 civics say 7200 on the tach., but 96+ Y8's say 6800? Is it just the OBD-II ECU? Both motors have the same strength valvetrains, right? I should have no problems taking the y8 to 7200 on my (stock) CRX tach? Oh, I'm running a p28 ecu, so I don't think the rev limiter kicks in till 7500 or so, I think. I haven't really tried to find it yet
so if my Y8 block ever grenades I should pop my y8 head on a Z6 block, huh? do you happen to know what kind of compression I'd have? Thanks for the help Katman!

i don't know how the z6 IM could be better than the y8. the y8 looks beefier and larger. the z6 IM does have 3 bolts that support the fuel rail instead of 2 on the y8.
the z6 IAT sensor also bolts to the back of an intake runner instead of the plug in the intake tube for the y8. that's the only advantage i can think of along with the 3 bolts for the fuel rail.
anyway, i have a bare z6 IM for sale. $50 + shipping

-- no prob.

-- possibly the camshaft profile is more aggressive over the Y8's cam, perhaps. **shrugs shoulders**
I've noticed 92-95 Z6 civics say 7200 on the tach., but 96+ Y8's say 6800? Is it just the OBD-II ECU?
-- well, yes the OBD2 Y8 ecu (if it truly has a 6800rpm redline), will cut out at 6800rpm. It's programmed into the ecu.
Both motors have the same strength valvetrains, right?
-- I wouldn't doubt it. Its basically the same motor.
I should have no problems taking the y8 to 7200 on my (stock) CRX tach?
-- sure, why not! heh.

-- actually yes, a stock P28 ecu has a 7500 redline. I know that for a fact.
so if my Y8 block ever grenades I should pop my y8 head on a Z6 block, huh?
-- yep.
do you happen to know what kind of compression I'd have?
-- a Y8 head on a Z6 block should bump up the compression approx. .2-.4 clicks.
Thanks for the help Katman!
-- no prob.
