Default WRX sound?

I'm trying to help my friend figure out whats wrong with his car , he over rev'd the engine from a mis-shift and now the car sounds like a boxster engine. Compression has been checked and its still good , but I still think the ringlands might be cracked. Any know what else it could be?

A skipped cam gear tooth is a possibility.

Yeah when ever honda's start sounding like wrx's you have a misfire.

To the orginal poster- I'd probably bet your friend bent some valves.
