Default Will a Y8 work in civic with Y7?

My bro's civic 97 comes with a D16Y7 and it is starting to consume alot of oil and smoke.

He has buddy with a D16Y8 swapped out of his civic but no computer.

Need to confirm if he can he just remove the Y7 and install the Y8?
I told him that he could run the motor with the Y7 computer like that but the VTEC stuff will not work.

He will need the ecu for the Y8 engine (it MIGHT run on the Y7 ecu, but not well so why bother?).

If you know the oil consumption on the Y7 is from the head and not the bottom end (dry and wet compression tests should tell you this) then you could use the Y7 bottom end with the Y8 head, transmission, wiring harness, and ecu and have a mini-me.

the oil consumption is coming from the rings.

got a Y8 complete and getting it all rebuilt for boost.
