Default Wierd thrust washer problem....

I have an engine(B18A) that has eaten a set of thrust washers once. I pulled the bottom end apart and replaced the crank as well as installed new thrust washers. The endplay was measured, and was within spec. The engine still makes the same "ticking/crunching" noise as before. All of the bearings are perfect, so I know that the noise isn't any type of knock.

The complete bottom end has been checked and reassembled, but the noise continues. I am about to pull it apart again to check the thrust washers. Any ideas on what would cause an engine to eat the thrust washers?
