Why is my car detonating?
Ive been running my setup for two years now and no problems till now..
Setup is b18c1 with us itr pistons and just bolt ons.. Running the skunk 2 p28 for my ecu.. Cam timing is at 0 0, ignition timing is at 15, fp is set at 48psi wot, and my car is running nice and rich.. What the hell is the problem.. It just started doing this like two weeks ago.. And yes I run 91 and better octane all the time.. Have even tried different programs in my ecu. Same thing.. I only detonated below 4500rpms from what I can hear.. Could it be my distributor or something to do with my ignition system? Any help would be awesome.. Thanks Anthony

Do you still have the knock sensors? If they are there and working, you should not hear knock. I don't know if you would have a CE code if they were not working. Have you double checked the timing, could it have moved? Have you tried retarding the timing any? Same gas station or different ones? Could it be running rich enough to carbon up the combustion chambers? There are cleaners that are supposed to get rid of that.
Any chance it is running lean at low rpm? A bad reading from the O2 sensor could lean it out too. What condition are the cap, rotor, plugs, wires in? Vacuum leak leaing it out?

No knock sensor with the p28 I have.. Have double checked timing and going to different chevron gas stations.. Cap and rotor look good also.. Always the same thing.. Tried retarding the timing and it still did it until I got to 8 degrees..Im clueless to what the problem is.. Like I said it just started happening a few weeks ago..

To me.... you have had the head off, no? How rich are you running? has the temp in your area been higher then normal? I suppose that if your running rich enough that it would cause that.... Hope you figure it out....Blaze
this is unlikely but possible...
is your timing belt good and tight?? even a loose timing belt could give you close to proper ignition timing at idle but slack off when you rev on it to screw with your ignition timing. especially under heavy load.

could be a problem with the pcv.... or crankcase ventilation in general...
see if the throttle body has any oil on it...
and check the pcv valve... also check the hose coming out of it to see how much oil is in there...
too much could definately cause pinging...
*edit*
and to answer your question... yes a problem in the ignition system could DEFINATELY cause pinging... if it's not sparking well enough to ignite the mix it ignite whether from the weak spark or from the compression... but not fully hence the knock...

I'd check the ignitor before I'd replace the dist... if the dist. is bad it'd most likely be a problem with one of the sensors... and you'd get a code... (unless that is also ignored with the p28 gsr combo). The ignitors are not in an ideal location at all... they get hot and go bad after a while...

Going to check spark gap and maybe try a new ignitor.. Seems to only do it when the motor is fully hot..85 or hotter outside.. But it didnt do this last summer so I know its something thats bad or going bad.. Any more suggestions would be great.. Thanks

Is the engine running hotter than it was before? Have you rechecked your fuel presure? Does it have an EGR system?

maybe the pcv system is allowing crankcase(oil) fumes into the intake and into the comb. chamber where it effectively lowers the detonation resistance of the a/f mixture.

the engine was nice and cool or the outside temps were?
Have you ever replaced your o2 sensor?
that very well may be the problem... if it's running lean it'll ping. the colder the intake air is the more it will ping.
It's kinda an expensive bit though... I'd suggest trouble shooting it if you can... universals are around 70 bucks and oe replacements are around 100-200 (that's for the heated o2 sensor not sure if you have one or not).

Hey man, just play the elimination game
I'd do each one of these and see how it runs after each trial
1) Add a bunch of fuel.
2) Lean it out a bit more than before.
3) Retard the ignition timing
4) Disconnect all the emissions **** you can get away with, without throwing a CEL.
5) Run some hard-core cleaner through there...there's some MOPAR (yes, I'm sorry) stuff that you spray into the intake manifold, turn the car over a bunch, let it sit overnight, take out the plugs, turn it over again to shoot out all the **** and then replace your plugs. It will get rid of carbon deposits.
It's either too much timing, too little fuel (possibly too much, but highly unlikely) or **** like oil/carbon or coolant
in there that's causing it, so you just have to be thorough....
