ok, i have a b16b motor and trans and during the 2nd to 3rd gear shift it usually grinds at higher rpm (typical honda) but recently it started going into fifth instead of 3rd (still grinds), this happend about five times in a row! then today, i go again, im at 8000rpm i go from 2nd to 3rd and it ends up in 1st!! wtf!! thank god nothing broke, but what could be causing this?
this is my fourth civic so please no flaming saying i dont know how to shift.
here is the set up and any related parts:
96 civic
b16b motor and trans
STOCK ITR gold shift-linkage
STOCK GSR shifter
weighted skunk2 shift ****
energy suspension shifter bushings.
8 lb flywheel
6 puck sprung clutch
N1 pulley
any opinions or experience would be appreacieated, im going to download the data from my ems to see how high the engine revved and post it tonight.

Try slowing down your shifts

i was just under there and everything was
when i slow the shifts it grinds longer and harder
but ill stil try it, grinding third slowly is better than ending up in first.

what would cause this? dont the type r trannys have a stronger 1 piece shift fork?

update: i was unable to find out the max rpm as my datalog was set to log short, also now my tranny wines a little at 10% throttle and my valves click... im thinking just adjust valves, change trans fluid, check compression and go from there, any ideas? i dogged it to see if i still had power and the thing still moves so i dont think i bent/broke anything :hopes:

well for one, jamming your car into gear while the syncro is still grinding and not yet engaged would be one way to bend a shift fork. A very easy way actually.

makes sense, but what are you supposed to do when your tranny grinds, just shift slow and let grind as long as it takes?

No
You would let the clutch out while you're in-between gears to get the shafts spinning at the right rpm, with the clutch out and it in neutral, get the rpm to where you would be in the next gear, then put the clutch back in and go into gear.
That is how you shift a non-synchronized transmission, and how you should shift if you have a grind, unless of course you like bending things and getting metal shavings everywhere.

ok i understand, basically i have to rev match like you would in a dog box since my synchros dont want to work. i wish i would have known that before becuase now my tranny wines at 10% throttle

whining means you have something so out of whack that it is riding a shaft
usually a whine means a bad bearing
if it whines according to speed its the diff bearings
if it is according to the rpm it is a main or countershaft bearing.

wow, thank you very much, you are very knowledgable
it whines when im slowing down and still in gear at like 10mph and below, sounds like im in reverse. and it kinda whines just cruising at 10% throttle, if i let off the throttle it stops whining.
i have a feeling this is going to be a very expensive mistake
