Default Shift Linkage Wobble while in gear

I am getting ready to figure this crap out.

When my car is in gear, I can move the shifter back and forth as if it was in neutral. The tranny still stays in gear but the level is able to swivel (not just a little, pretty significantly).

At first I was going to replace the linkage thinking that might be the cause but now I am looking at this exploded diagram and wondering if it might have something to do with the seeds and things between the inside of the chasis and the outside.

I have a Skunk2 Short Shifter on it but I am not sure that is the problem.

Also, I can actually PICK UP the entire shift lever and it seals off the sounds coming from under my car a little better if that helps.

I have never pulled the parts apart that sit between the chais and the lever before:

I am talking about parts 9,1,8,7 would those be part of my problem? Or does everyone seem to think its just the linkage?

Thanks for the help guys. I am starting to work out the small bugs with my car.

or it could be you're moving the whole transmission if the motor mounts are bad

uhh... I am telling you it is part #30... #1,#8, and #7, are just urethane inserts that wouldn't be worn down enough to really affect the feel of the linkage. if #30 is broken or loose it will feel like all your gears are neutral, just check it for me please.

Sloppy shifter? My shifter felt like it was in neutral in every single gear.

When I did my replacement of the bushings last weekend, as I took the bolt out of the base of the shifter, all the bearings and crap just fell out onto the ground. Good thing I was replacing the entire shfter unit!

My only difficulties were getting the linkage back onto the tranny mount, and getting the rusted bolts holding the shifter in the linkage housing drilled out. Nothing major.

Now it is better than when it was new.... ES Bushings, ebay short shifter.

Have you had the pin break before?

Part 30 should not be loose. Part 8 is plastic and 1 and 7 are rubber.

I'm guessing part 8 is cracked or something. I would also get Energy Suspension equivelents of part 15 and 19, as they can also cause an issue once they start wearing out.

I agree.

#30 is the cluprit of shifter play 99% of the time in these cars.

It's an extreemely inexpensive part that make a huge difference in driving experience.

When I bought my last car I noticed it had some shifter play so I checked out the linkage. Turns out there was a bolt where the roll pin should have been Replaced the bolt with the correct roll pin and it tightened right up.

I've heard of shops doing this because they are too lazy to order the correct roll pin. That's the first thing I would change if I were you. Get a new roll pin and if you still have too much movement then I would move on to inspecting the other parts of your shift linkage.

It's also possible that the input shaft on the transmission is worn. But I doubt it.
