Wheel Stud removal
Well I was reading the archives and everyone says to use a dremel and cut the broke stud's head at a 45 degree angle and it will clear the hub...WELL THIS IS BULLSHIT. I used a dremel and i was not able to do it, and i dont think there is anyother way to remove it other then the RIGHT way which is taking the hubs. Now correct me if im wrong but when you remove the hub from the knuckle with a slide hammer, do you need a hydralic press to put it back in...how do the tire and brake shops do it?? Any help will be appriciated.. I was talking to someone at a shop and I asked them if I took the knuckles out my self how much they charged to replace the stud, and they said 5-10 per stud.
Schley Products makes a tool (available from snap-on, mac, matco, etc...) for removing the hubs on the car which is how some shops do it. Or you can take the knuckle off the car and have the hub pressed out. I don't think a slide hammer will work. It is easy to knock the studs out and replace them when the hub is out. You will need a new wheel bearing for when the hub is pressed back into the knuckle.
I'm not exactly sure what your application is, but usually if you back the bolts out that hold the hub to the knuckle about 1/2" you can hit the heads of the bolts with a hammer. Once all the heads are against the knuckle, back them out another 1/2" and keep going that way. This usually removes the hub/bearing intact, and only takes a few minutes, which will give you the access to the lug studs that you need.
I decided to go ahead and take off the steering knuckle and just take the whole hub assembly to a shop so they can take it off with there "majic tools." But another question I have is, I have notice a lot of people say to replace the bearings....why would I have to replace it? How much to they go for?
