Default whats the difference between drop compression

whats the difference between dropping the compression through a headgasket and dropping the compression through pistons?

pistons are the safer way to do it. if you increase your head gasket thickness, the you run a risk of coolant leaking if you go to far, and with pistons, the shape of the top changes to change the compression ratio.
