It really depends on how it happens and how high it goees before you catch it. You can miss the gear and bounce it off the limiter and nothing happens most of the time. But if you mechanically over rev the motor, like going from redline 3rd to 4th but you miss and get 2nd there is a very good chance that you can do allot of damage, but you may get lucky and get teh clutch back in quick enough not to let it rev that high. Worst case can be seen below in these pics.

A couple things. Stresses in an engine rise exponentially with rpms, so if you overrev enough and the stresses get high enough, parts break and you have catastrophic engine failure.

A less-bad scenario is that the springs that hold valves against the cams are too weak to do it at the elevated rpms, and the pistons smack into the valves. Parts still break/ fail, but at least you might not have total engine destruction.

The second scenario might still leave you with a relatively well functioning engine, but one that still needs to be repaired. This can get costly if you can't do some of the work yourself. I suggest you simply remove the head and give it to a machine shop for rebuild. Make sure they don't put the rocker shafts in backwards. It's a pain in the *** if you realize they did this after you put the head back onto the engine.

Don't ask me how I know.

thanks for the replies. i probably wasn't too clear on what happend though. i redlined 3rd gear and missed 4th gear and reved a lil over 8. maybe to 2 to 3 notches over. hopefully i that didnt do a lot of damage. it was just bugging me the past couple of days because i'm pretty new to this stuff.
