What kind of timing gun?
Is there a specific timing gun to use for a B18C? I saw they have them at Kregan, but I am skepticle of anything from Kregan, execpt of course thier chrome wheel covers, thoses are ill
If you are doing stock timing- any cheap gun will do. The cheap adjustable timing lights with a **** on the back aren't all that accurate- if you want adjustable you can borrow someone's or buy a cheaper one for @$150 or a nice one for a few hundred$
$340!!! How often do you need to adjust you timing? I definitly plan on doing more mods, and I want to do all the work myself, but I will most probably not be racing and changing things up week in and week out. How much would a shop charge for an adjustment?...ballpark.
Well our shop is a class 1 shithole. We have old junky equipment. We do have a nice rack and that is about it. Here is the deal:
You have your parts swappers and your lube boys and your diag do it all guys.
Management only cares about the dollar. So, diag guy gets shafted- he gets all the problem cars and has to make his money on upsells and repair and warranty work and fixing the parts swapper's mistakes. The parts hanger is dumb, doesn't care, can't diag, but can do all the gravy. The diag guy can do it all, fast and properly, so to move the most cars through the shop, diag guy gets all the stuff swapper breaks or can't do and swapper guy gets easy work- that way, the work gets done and there is more$$. Someone has to do the diag, and there is more gravy than diag- so you can have more swappers then diag guys. Usually the good diag guys take a personal interest in finding out "WHY". If you know "WHY" then you can fix it. Swappers just want to know "where's my next timing belt". Lube boy simply does little stupid stuff (freebies, oil changes, etc). Diag guy buys tools he needs to do is job faster and more accurately. Swapper has the minimum of tools- he can always borrow from diag guy (when he's not looking). Catch my drift??
Most independent shops are started by pissed off diag guys.

You should see the factory training- hahaha. MOST of it is procedural- how to put a timing belt on. However, last time I had to go to honda"school" they actually had some new stuff on how the evaporative system monitors and operation- I was amazed. Most of it is crap training- but- there is always something to learn- I always pick up a few bits of useful info during the week there.
