What does BOV stand for?
What's the context? My guess is Blow Off Valve, another name fore Wastegate? But outside of a turbo related thing I don't know...

Blow Off Valve is different from the wastegate...

Think of a straw. when you blow air through the straw it flows easily, when you close the end of the straw and keep blowing, there is alot of pressure then in the straw. a BOV opens when you close the throttle plate and releases all the pressure
A wastegate protects the turbo from overboosting. its connected to the manifold and has a spring in it, when ehough boost pressure is reached, the spring begins to give and the wastegate opens. this prevents the turbo from overboosting.
Wastegates do not "protect" from overboosting....they "regulate" how much boost a turbo creates....

but yes, they do regulate the amount of boost.
