Default What do I need to perform my own engine acid baths.

I was interested in doing some of my own engine cleaning, I wasn't sure if they use common chemicals I can purchase at lowes or home depot. I've just got many motors and other parts, maybe save some cash.

best stuff i ever used is simple green cover ur distributor and wires and air filter and fuse box if its still in engine bay really really good and spray simple green heavy all over the engine and let it sit for 5 mins and take a stiff brush scrub all the real soiled areas and spray off works great

I was thinking more like just bare block then bare head out of the car acid baths like a machine shop would do. Heat up some acid and dip the block in it. just don't know what kind

The products used to clean engines are bases, not acids. They are usually a solution of sodium hydroxide. They are hard to buy and even harder to get rid of.Mixed a little to strong and it turns the aluminum black. They need to be heated to at least 150 degrees to work, and need to be sprayed to work very well.Okite (sp) was a supplier but you may need to be listed as a hazardous waste generator to buy it now. Most shops are using Safety Clean products because of how expensive it is to get rid of old product.
