weird vtec problem
well i finally got everything put together in my 1st gen. b16...i recently installed full supertech valvetrain with sk2s2 cams...it has a bunch of bolt ons and all that good ****.sarted right up...it idled fine reved fine all that....so i was just drivin around with it for a little while until i decided to get it up there into vtec range...my crossover is at 6,000....as soon as it trys to crossover into vtec it makes a real loud bah bah bah sound and there is no power...if i keep my foot down on the gas the revs go up and after a certain rpm it pulls again...HARD...now i took it to my buddies shop down the street and he took it for a spin....he said it feels like it is cutting off either ignition or fuel...and its not mechanical...i did the installation myself and torqued everything down to exact specifications...now the harness in the car is a real hack job...but i get no cel and the car is perfect other than right at the crossover...any body ever encounter something like this....
of course i set the timing...how would i do the valve adjustment without the motor bein at tdc??well when we were drivin it we noticed a gas smell so i checked and the hose that connected to the FPR was leakin right at the base of the FPR...so i just got some new hosing and fixed the problem...but this did not do anything as far as the vtec problem...id really like to get this thing running properly so that i can actually see the performance gains of my newly built head
seems i didnt answer ur question
pr3 ecu
well the 6k changeover worked great for my old set-up...but im not sure about the new one...im not gonna **** with the crossover until i get this thing on the dyno and see where it makes the most power....any help would be appreciated...i guess i just gotta drive under 6k till this weekend....

ok...any explanation why that it would only cause it to do this for like 700 rpm...after it gets to about 6700 vtec kicks in full force.....its a funky *** noise too...it sounds like the car is backfiring...and there is a super MEAN dip in power and then all of a sudden its like everything works perfect again and the car just shoots forward...i only tried this twice because i didnt wanna cause any damage from doing it repeadetly...20 minute freeway drive from work to home and it killed me that i couldnt get into vtec...oh well ill figure something out

well last night someone told me that the sk2s2 was too much cam for my stock compression....so we set the vtec at 6700....and the vtec was working ok...now today the vtec only works half the time..its pretty confused
first he was right, your crossover is set way to high, vtec should kick in (normally) between 4k and 5k... this is going to sound dumb, but did you get longer valves, and springs for the new cam's? (sorry if you already said, im too lazy to press the back button on my browser)
also check to see if your ecu is good

Just a thought here.. Did you put all the vtec pins in correctly and where they are suppose to go, I believe that you can reverse the outer rockers which would make the vtec not engauge properly..

no the valves are the same length...just flat top
of course i got new springs

well the machine shop did the tear down and assembly of the valvetrain...they have been in the business for 30 years and im sure that they did it properly. i however i did install the cams myself and torqued everything to specification...i highly doubt that the p[roblem is mechanical...im thinking that somehow the oil pressure is not correct....vtec engages nice in 1st..kinda bumbles then gets going fine in second..and then in third it just does nothing...and my cel 22 turns on when i try to go into vtec in third....its weird i dunno whats going on...

Ahh, didnt know that they didnt pull it apart.. I did see a GSR that had the rockers in wrong and had some problems engauging into vtec so thats why I mentioned it..
Whats your air/fuel like when going into vtec?

so u can take the rocker arm assembly out as a whole?
now purpleterror was telling me that i need to change my lma's to at least type r...because that the ones in a 1st gen. b16 were not made large enough to handle a high lift cam....now for the time being i have a stock ecu....and my limiter is at 8k....do i really need to change them now or even if i go to 9k....
also is there any chance that i might need a new oil pump...or something for the oil system...it just seems that the vtec works perfect in 1st...stumbles then catches in 2nd...and feels like there aint enough oil pressure in third....also if i accelerate from about 80 to-100 in fifth cel 22 comes on as well...so im really thinkin its an oil pressure issue...
how much oil is a 1st gen. b16 suppossed to take? 4 quarts right?
