Default VTEC won't work.

I have a vtec problem that I can't figure out why it won't come on in my '92 GSR w/ B17.

I had vtec working when I bought the car. I spun a bearing at 120k and rebuilt the engine (same block with new head). Also new oil pump with original pan and pickup. Now the vtec won't engage. I can apply 12v directly to the solenoid and it clicks as if engaging. I read 15 ohms from pin on connector to ground through vtec sol. I get 12v at the oil pressure sol from ecu. good ground black wire. Oil pres sol reads short between two pins. The wires are all good from ecu to vtec. I disconnect the wires and get codes 21 and 22. Screen on vtec is clean. Installed another head Ran a oil line from filter area to fitting on back of head (same one used for LSVTEC). Tried a different ecu. And still no work.

If any one of the required inputs to the ecu for vtec were missing there would be a code? Is there a way to see if ecu is sending vtec signal to vtec sol?

Anyone have any ideas or some help what else to try??? Thanks

check your oil press or oil press switch. if you dont have enough oil pressure vtec will not engage

I've checked the level and it was good. I went ahead and changed the oil with 10W30. Still no work. Ran wire with switch from bat to vtec sol and it still clicks. Tried the same while drive and engine above vtec rpm. Still no work?

make sure your speedo is hooked up and registering correctly cause if its not than you wont have vtec. i wouldn't say that its an ecu problem cause you tried another one and it still didnt work unless that computer was beat too. did you try getting a new vtec pressure switch? thats the only other thing i can think of

The speed-o is correct and i made sure it was nice and tight every time i was trouble shooting. And i know the computers are good cuz i tried them in another car and vtec works. I have tried putting a new vtec solenoid, oil pressure switch and even bypassed it on the computer, and still no vtec. I Tried running a wire from the solenoid to a switch to the battery (can hear it clicking, just no vtec. Even while moving) So i dont know whats wrong with it.

Has this head been taken apart by chance?

not that i am aware of. It has the o-ring and dowel pin on the #3 cap, and the oil pick-up doesnt have a gasket, but it does have honda-bond on it. I guess i should check that again. Ive been trying to figure this out for like 3 wks now. lol. bout to order a new harness and check that off the list as well.

i know those are there. Man hate to say it but i think its something internally. Just put 2k on the new engine. What internally can make vtec not work? The head was originally mated to a gsr block, but the person had the head still ran with the oil feed line for lsvtec. It was on a turbo car.
If i hooked a switch up to it it should have turned on, unless there isnt enough oil pressure correct?
I know its not the ecu's. Ive tried a stock p28, chipped p28, chipped p06, stock p61 (throwing code for knock, which includes vtec).

Any other suggestions?

thanks for all the replies.

the only other thing i can think of is your LS/V oil line. make sure that there are no
kinks in the line or even some sort of air pocket or something. i have no idea if its possible to get air in the line but thats almost what it sounds like. let me know what happens in very interested to see what it is

GOOD LUCK

i guess you misunderstood that. The lsvtec line was taken off and the head was just plugged. So there is not line from the block to head. I might try putting one on to feed more oil and see if that does it.

Yeah thanks for the luck i need it. ha

If it was running a feed line for Vtec before that means the Vtec hole in the head is plugged. Did you remove the plug from the head?? If you didn't of course you know you have to remove the head.....

But it was attached to a gsr block, why would he plug it then? Well hopefully that all it is. Where is the plug located? im guessing where the head and block mate?

Thanks

oh ok i was wonderin why you would have a extra line ran when you had a vtec block ha ha. yea i guess if you wanna tap the block and hook a line back up do it...you went through all your other options. im pretty sure its under your intake manifold but i'm not 100% sure. let me know how you make out

Guess I missed the part where you said it was on a GSR block. If you had it on that block there's was no need to have a feed line.

Hook up the oil line and see what happens. The plug is basically right behind the distributor...well on the back corner by it.

try the switch to the + battery and solenoid again.....make sure you disconnect the vtec oil pressure.

hit the vtec button anywhere after 4500

if it still doesnt work, then i have no idea...it should work that way even with a non vtec ecu

alright i will try again alil later. at work right now. I ran the oil line from the block to the head. And just found out my #4 ring isnt seating. The gauge goes to about 100 then slowly drops. But i want to figure out whats wrong with the vtec b4 maybe taking it back apart.

Thanks for all the replies.

and yeah it does suck not having my MaDd Jay DEE MMMM VtAk. And i dont want to pull the engine back out cuz its only got 2.5k on it. Just put it in not even a month ago.
