Default VTEC switch??

Has anybody hooked their vtec up to a switch so u could turn it on when u want? I have had a few friends who have done this to their cars that they swapped the engines in. To me it doesn't sound like a good idea. Dont u lose power that way? If anybody has a answer to this it would be appreciated. I need something to prove to them that this isnt a good idea. Thanx for your help.

Just wondering...what is the point of making that switch?

Here is a little something your friend should read:

"With add on VTEC controllers, the camshaft is forced to switch while running on the wrong fueling and ignition tables. This can cause fuel to be as far as 10% out and ignition to be retarded up to 6 degrees. Some VTEC controllers allow a coarse correction for fuelling, none allow correction for ignition advance."

Don't do it, if you wanna adjust your VTEC for tuning just get a VTEC controller, Nameless and MikeSarr_GSR are right. Why do it anyway, with a relatively stock motor switch if you switch it over too early you lose power, too high and you lose power.

its pointless and a waste of time.
honda put the vtec engagment where it is for a reason. dont play with it unless you need to (cams, etc)

I kind of understand what my friend is talking about. The way he sees it is when vtec is on it makes the best power so why dont he just turn it on earlier.

You don't want this, Honda put many years of R&D into vtec, the ECU knows the best time and conditions to engage it and has the fuel and igntion maps to support it properly... just leave well enough alone.

contrary to the hype, earlier is not better (in most cases).
Stock or Modified, most of the time the whole reason of being able to change vtec pt. ..is to move it higher.

It's best to let the ECU control it.

ECU gathers signals on vehicle speed, engine rpm, load, water temp, and other data to control VTEC.
VTEC is variable. For example, at optimum load, VTEC can come on at 5200, and if youre not really on the pedal.. it can come in at 4800. It might be the other way around, I dunno

The point is, let the ECU control it, or get Hondata. With Honderdata, VTEC will still vary even though you have a set point. Im not sure if VTEC will vary with a V-AFC, can someone comment on that??

the vtec lobes do not make more power at lower rpm. the whole reason for vtec is so u can a high reving car the makes lots of power up at the top of the rpm range while being driveable at the lower end.

unless ur tuning it on a dyno just dont change it.

no you dont understand.

if you stop to think about it - both you and your friend will realise what it is you ar dealing with.

the reason variable duration and lift helps is becasue it allows you to utilise a HELLA lumpy cam profile that doenst work at low RPMs.

once into higher revs, the benifits of such a aggressive cam can be realised.

so yeah. VTEC doesnt make power - it is not a turbo - it only allows better breathing at higher RPMs.

that is all.

VTEC engaging at low rpm = too much overlap = loss of power
