Default vtec help

hello, just did a d16z6 into a 90 dx hatch with the dx tranny and converted to obd1. using a p28

it doesnt really feel like vtec is kicking in then after i reach between 4-5k the engine light comes on and then afterwards flashes a tps code but once i turn off the car and restart it the code is cleared. all the wiring is done right.... but the only thing i can think of is the fact that its not an electric speedo sensor on the tranny and the ecu doesnt know

anyone have any word on this???

thanks

TPS(Throttle Position Sensor-located on rear side of throttle body) has nothing to do with the cable driven speedometer. When you say all the wiring is correct, do you mean you did the TPS wire swap during your DPFI to MPFI conversion? Has the TPS ever been altered from the factory's setting? Maybe you have some loose pin fitment at the TPS. Maybe you changed it and have it incorrectly calibrated. These sensors are often disturbed during engine install/ removal. Good Luck and Follow Up.

yes you change the two outside wires on the tps on the mpfi conversion, i know. and it is set correctly. wouldnt the tps code stay on if it was just that? it clears after i cut it off. it only happens when you get on it up top. i only mentioned the speedo bc i know that vtec isnt working correctly right now with the cable speedo and then it only comes on after first gear when it should kick into vtec... so im just thinking its looking for it and isnt getting the signal so its throwing a tps code. i do not know

thanks for someone actually responding. its code 7 btw

If you know how to set it then set up your meter and watch the voltage as you sweep the throttle to wide open throttle. Very slowly the voltage shoud smoothly transition from around .45 volts to 4.5 volts. Check pin fitment at the TPS look very carefully at the pins and wire on both side of the connector. Just a few ideas.

the pins are good... havent checked the voltage but wouldnt it show a code all the time if the tps was bad?

brand new spark plugs/wires. ecu that has speed sensor disabled for vtec

idk what else to look for

You need to check the voltage like KWay said. There are multiple reasons why the ECU would think the TPS is not working properly. Until the voltage is checked there's no way to know which reason it is.

While your under the hood with a meter, check the MAP sensor voltage at idle and at higher RPM's. Post the voltages and what RPM's the motor was at. While I don't know if Honda ECU's do this, some ECU's will throw a TPS code when the TPS doesn't change proportionally with the MAP.

well that would make a LITTLE more sense on why it wouldnt stay on all the time

if it helps at all... and it might be the entire problem but i am using a tl v6 throttle body and the iac v might need to be replaced
