VTEC activation in a SOHC EX???
I know, I know, kinda a stupid question, but I was just talking to a friend of mine, and he says he's never had his motor over 5K RPM.. It's a 96 EX? I have NEVER dealt with this motor, so I don't know where to tell him to listen for the changover? Redline is 7K, correct? So VTEC ,I'm guessing, would be about the same as it is for us DOHC guys, around 5500? So he's never hit it. Please let me know.. thanks all!
Right, and I've never rode in his car, he just mentioned to me that it's VERY VERY slow, and has never revved it higher than 5K. I was like, MAN, you've never hit VTEC at all?! Hmm when's it change over?
and Here I am..
So, around 5500 it is then? That's cool. I'll tell him to try it on his way home from work tonight. thanks guys!

In the sohc vtec (D16), the vtec activation is lower than the Dohc motors. It activates around 5k. I have my vtec controller set at 4800, but when I race I go down to 4600. Cant go too low or you will float valves and leaving it set low will eventually burn out the selenoid. just some fyi for ya. Hope it helps

Vtec kicks in at 5200rpm and I know this for a fact. It does not kick in at 5500rpm it kicks in at 52k rpm. You will not hear it much...but...if you have a loud exhaust just listen for the regular engine power and when the vtec kicks in (with loud exhaust in mind) you will hear the motor kinda pitch....with a quiet exhaust you will hear a small bang...hope this info helps
Can you feel the sohc changover on a bone stock car? seems you would be able to? I just hate to see him get like a Cavalier or something cux he thinks his ex is slow lol!
Hehehe...yeah don't get no cav. Tell him to stick with honda...tuning a civic is one of the least expensive and one of the best tuned car out there....and yeah most def. he can feel the vtec kick in if its bone stock....remember 5200 rpm is the activating point.....after I put in my exhaust and turbo I couldn't tell if the vtec was kicking in so I went ahead and put in a Vtec light on my gauge cluster and it lights up everytime Vtec kicks in...its pretty koo....if you have any more questions you can email me at incognitoracerr@aol.com and I can help out....I have a 95 ex civic sohc and can probably answer most of your questions...
cool, thanks for the info man! I appreciate it. Is there a best upgrade path for SOHC? Just wondering what's best bang for buck otu there that I can tell him...
Send me your email address so that we can communicate better instead of writting back and forth on the forum...there are definately a lot of things to do for power thats money saver...
vtec kicks in at 5500 rpms on a d16y8. as for feeling it, it won't be really noticeable, just when it kicks in the tone of the engine, will have a higher pitch. vtecs like a 15 shot of nitrous haha.
