Default VTEC Activation

I have a B16A1 that i just swapped into a 91 civic, I was wondering how you can tell if your VTEC is kicking in, i cant hear any change in tone? What should happen different, should there be a big change in sound with this motor?

I have a B16A2 and the VTEC kicks in at 5600 rpm. It doesn't get louder, but the tone changes. If you have a stock intake, it's really hard to hear.
