- B18c1 w/ gsr tranny
- 1995 civic dx
Motor was fully rebuilt, tranny wasn't messed with. First time we dropped the motor in and drove it the speedo was working fine. Then I had to rebuild the motor because the rings got washed out on break in. Re-ringed the pistons and dropped the motor back in. Car runs great, but the speedo doesn't work now. Car runs in limp mode and vtec wont engage; CEL #17 - VSS - Vehicle speed sensor.
I've checked all the grounds. I even added a second ground from the frame to the tranny, thinking it might help.
I then dropped in a working VSS from a B16 tranny, but the speedo still doesn't budge.
Only thing I can think of is clean the plugs on the VSS really good. Could it be a problem with wiring behind the cluster? Whoever had the car before me installed a cluster with a tach, and ghetto wired everything. I went through and soldered all the wires, but didn't mess with anything else.

yeah theres a little bit of corrosion. do u think even a really small amount would cause it to not work? it was really hard to pull the plug off when i put the B16 VSS in there. i had to press the clip then pry it off with a flat head screw driver. *shrug*

yup got it fixed today.
i took my old VSS (cuz i knew it worked before, and theres no reason why it shouldnt work 2 months later when it just sat there) and i sprayed Greased Lightning (same as Simple Green) straight outta the bottle onto the VSS. I let it soak for bout a minute, then used compressed air to just blow everything out. I then did the same thing to my plug on my harness. I kept blowing air in there to make sure everything was nice and dry. After it was dry, it looked like it got rid of most of the corrosion that was in there.
Then I took some Brake Kleen and soaked the VSS and harness plugs the same way and let it soak for a minute. I just did this because my fingers were sticky from the Greased Lightning and I didn't want the plugs to be sticky. I blew that out with compressed air too. After I made sure the **** was dry, I put it all back in.
Started her up, and rolled out onto the street. Gave it some gas and the speedo needle was moving. Ohhh I was so happy!
