VAFC or MOTEC???????
You're kidding right?
Ok, summary:
VAFC - piggy back computer that interfaces in between the MAP/TPS sensors that "fool" your computer into seeing something its not really seeing to optimize mods.
MOTEC - completely replaces computer. Full, standalone custom engine management system that you can tune for N/A, FI, NOS, etc, etc. Completely programmed with a laptop and every peice of the fuel/spark map is dialed in by YOU. This is an AWESOME system and used by pro race teams - datalogging as well. However the cost is up near $10K.
Eletromotive sells a system called the TEC-II (TEC-III coming soon) offers many of the features of MOTEC, and runs about $2K for a whole setup. It is also a standalone engine management system, setup and tuned by YOU. Doest offer some of the flexibility as MOTEC tho.
AEM is coming out with a plug n play programmable computer at the end of this year. I'm curious to see how it pans out, looks promising.

Jumping into the thread here....
do the motec's come with base vtec maps like the hondata. I know hondata are mod'd honda ecu's. I was debating on getting a hondata or motec and that was the one thing stopping me.
or am I completely stupid and have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about?

Most likely not...... You have to remember, the Hondata is made specifically for hondas, so they can send you maps. The Motec, TEc2, and others are not car specific. If you want, you can install the Tec2 on any other4 cylinder, same with haltech, and I'm pretty sure motec. Someone out there could send you base maps to start with I'm sure though.
And as for the original question.....haha....if money is no object to you, the motec is far better. The VAFC is as good as an FMU compared to the motec, or any standalone It is just inferior in every way to the motec. Not that its a bad little toy, but I mean damn, look at the price difference!
PS: Papadakis uses a motec, saw it in his car at nopi
