VTEC

Variable timing electronic control

Yes it does have to do with the cam lobes

Vtec is similar to a turbo, what the difference is, is that it is built into the head instead of externally like you would see on anybody elses car. When Vtec spools, it spools much quicker and you can program in when and how hard it spools.

However, Vtec as well as turbos really don't give you any extra power, the extra power comes from a more aggressive camshaft grind that it takes to make these things work properly.

I'm super duper serious. It's what top fuel dragsters use, they don't shift into second, they hit Vtec.

VTEC (there is no H, no K, no hyphen).
Variable valve-Timing-and-lift Electronic Control

It is pretty much exactly what the name implies - it varies valve timing and lift.

You were right about the cams. Essentially, you look at a VTEC cam and see that each cylinder will have 3 intake lobes instead of just 2 (DOHC VTEC systems have 3 exhaust lobes as well).

an electrically-activated solenoid allows a hydraulic system to lock the rockers to an additional assembly which is moved by the 3rd cam lobe - so you can near instantly go from a mild street lobe to a more wild race lobe for higher RPM power.

from what i understand vtec is this little pin that pushes into the camshafts to lock up all three little lobes into place holding the intake and exhaust valves open for a longer amount of time at a certain pre set RPM....

ITs a Pin that locks the rockers together not the cam
But you have the right idea

it doesn't push into the cams.

it locks the 3 rocker arms together. a camshaft is just 1 piece.
