Default Using Easy-Outs

2 Broken cam cap bolts. Blue Point Easy-Out's. The kind where u have to drill a hole in the broken bolt and then tap in the easyout and unscrew it with a ratchet thing.

Please give me some tips on using one as I don't want to fuc it up. Do I use oil on the bolt that I have to drill? etc....

drill the hole into the bolt as big as you can and use the biggest size easy out as possible, it will be easier to remove the broken bolt. plus this will help prevent breaking the easy out by trying to use the smaller ones. easy outs are impossible to drill out!

1. Ensure that you use a center punch to center the first impression, to protect you from any skating...

2. Ensure that the drill you use to power the easy out is fully charged...

WTH? hands only! - unless there is some new fandangeled easy-out that hasnt reached down-under yet!!! maybe you meant the drill drilling the pilot hole...??

3. Apply some oil only in small quantities, if smoking is present...

if smoke is present - you are drilling too fast!

4. Always start with a pilot hole that is alot smaller to allow the easy out to penetrate upon reverse drilling...

5. Use both hands and take your time...

6. Always use gloves and eye protection... It only takes one small piece of metal to end your view, of the beautiful world...

7. Stop and curse... Stop and drink some water... Stop and prey to the Honda Gods

8. When it's all done... You can pat yourself on the back for not backing down...

Teken<---Who wishes the very best to Legendboy in this endevor...
yeah and good luck!!!

dont rush it - if you find that you are rushing STOP!

it usually means that you are just about to break something expensive

don't break the easyout.... it is stronger than 95% of the drill bits made.... don't ask me how I know.

I am going to go and buy some new drill bits instead of using the ones that come with the easyout set. Is "high speed steel" bits good enough or should I get cobalt bits. Should I use left handed bits instead as that may help free the peice and if it doesn't, help loosen it for the easyout?

Use the new ones as backups... the ones that come with the kit are sized to work... use them first and then switch to the new bit once the kit one is dull.

Should I use left handed bits instead
if you can find/afford them go ahead.

Soak the broken bolts with some PB blaster or other good thread penatrant. This will help it to extract easier

Well, the Honda gods were impartial I think. I got one out easily, in about 10 mins, the other, inside the valve cover bolt is going to stay broken off and in my head for now. The reason? Because there is an oil galley that uses the hole that the bolt goes thru to transfer oil. That means that I can't drill there because all the filings will go thru the engine via oil. I am going to trust that running with 3 bolts extra tight will be good enough...(I hope) Thanks for all ur replies T

hmm.......Well, I used reverse speed steel bit to extract the 1st bolt......2nd bolt: The hole is 6.2mm (aprox.) the bolt is 6mm inside diameter. It is recessed aprox 1.3" down the 6.2mm hole and is about .75" long past that point. The bolt was twisted off and is at an angle. I couldnt even get my brand new sharp punch to get a square hit on it. I tried the lefty bit but it wouldnt grab at all, just kept sliding off. I'd say that I was lucky to get one out without incident. I wasn't expecting to get ether so I am happy. Set ur expectations low and don't get disapointed! j/k

Teken: Yes... There are two styles of easy outs... One which is used by hand, the other is made to accept a drill to reverse power the bolt / threads out... We use ours for de-installing the security screws called *one ways* that are made from titanium alloys...

Which are produced and manufactured by Ameritrade BSR England, which make drilling bits for diamond mines...

the correction stands!

thanks Teken

Legendboy, man good luck...

maybe if you...nah, you cant get a dint in it can you?

that sucks...

NO, you can't do that successfully. That's like saying I only have one ROD bolt so I'll torque it to 60 lbs to make up for only one.
Get the type of easy out that you don't have to drill all the way thru the bolt. Take the proper sized bit and hold it lightly in place in the center of the bolt. Keep at it for 10 minutes until you get a big enough pilot hole to apply pressure to finish the drilling procedure. Do not drill all the way thru the bolt. Spray more PB Blaster and screw in the easy out and the bolt WILL come out that way. YOU CAN DO THIS. DON'T BE A QUITTER>

I would have tried more but I don't want to get ANY steel/aluminum fillings inside my oil galleys, they will end up in my cylinders. I'll take some pics so u guys know what I'm talking about. If there was a way for me to block them up I would, there is no way. I have another head that I will have to strip and rebuild but untill then I don't see any other way. The worst thing that can happen is I can break a camshaft or cap. I may very well ruine that head but I'm all out of money so I'll have to stick with what I have, and slowly rebuild my other head

EDIT: BTW, thanks for all your good ideas and suggestions! It was all very helpful!!!

get some cloth/gaffer tape and some plastic - completely mask off the entire head - leaving the offending bit teh only thing exposed,

tehn you will have no worries about shavings getting where you dont want them...

might help?
