Unexplained Ticking/tapping noise on startup
Hey, I changed my cams from s2 stage1s to s2 stage2s I did a thurough valve adjustment when i did the changeover, I get it all put together and start the engine.. I had an odd ticking noise that "seemed" to be coming from around the #1 cylinder, so at first thought I had a valve ticking, my buddy told me i should wait a second that it could be a vtec rocker stuck (or something along those lines), and sure enough after the car warmed up, the ticking/tapping went away completely. I drove the car a couple of days straight with no incident, but then today, (first cold startup after changing the oil yesterday) sure enough on startup it was ticking/tapping again, as soon as the engine warmed up the noise went away completely... any thoughts?
You sure it's not coming from the base of the distributor by #4? Loose timing belt will cause this ticking... goes away after 5-10 minutes. Did you tension the timing belt correctly after doing the cams?
No big deal, mine has always done the same as well. Its never worried me, it only does it when the motors cold and I figure its just from the initial lack of oil pressure during and shortly after startup.
bump cause i'm having the same problem after installing a CTR intake cam.
just did a valve job and on a cold start up, after letting the car sit for hours, i would start up the car and hear a loud ticking noise.
any other ideas?

My LMAs are bad... Sounds like a bunch of marbles rolling around in your cylinder head, sound goes away at the VTEC crossover point.
I'm not too worried about it... It annoys the hell out of me but I don't think it will cause any damage.

well if thats the way is sounds when the lma's are bad, then i don't have bad lma's.
my is just kind of a loud tick..tick...tick...tick...noise on the start up. it only did this
once earlier, so who knows if it will do it again.
since i just did a valve job, and it didn't make that noise before the valve job, i'm thinking one valve is too lose or something.
could it have been just a stuck vavle at that time for some reason and then when i drove the car up, it got unstuck and thats why i didn't hear it anymore?

My b16 does the same thing on the #1 cylinder. But only on cold start ups. I have always wondered what it is!! Bump for someone who may konw the answer. And i know its now bad lma's because i know what they sound like and look like and have replaced them before.
I have the same annoying noise with my b16 before & and after throwin in cams S2S1 It sounds like somethin is horribly loose. I ve been told that its the lma's too. won't do mamage if not replaced , just annoys ya... I hope
