if you didn't properly shim the tranny, and it is way off, bearings will EAT themselves.

the only shimming required is shimming final drive carrier bearings to set ring gear preload. If not done correctly, can cause issues.

Have you changed anything internal to trans?

The mainshaft, countershaft and diff/carrier bearins all have shims.

countershaft doesn't have any shims, only a lock ring.

Trust me Mista bone, I definitely have a clue. I know what you mean about mainshaft shimming/ countershaft shimming, it's just that there is not a selectable shim when setting gear clearances (only one size on most for gear set shimming or replacement of parts to correct/ however, there is selection of shims when setting mainshaft thrust clearance)
Wasn't trying to step on your toes, I was only referring to actual shim selection of carrier bearings. this is what most people think of or refer to when talking about shimming a trans.
If you haven't disassembled either shafts (most people never even get this far), then nothing should have changed in regards to shimming them. The point I was getting ready to make earlier is that based on experience ( I'm sure you have experienced this also), most guys that have replaced final drive and/or bearings have sometimes mistakenly switched shims or did not shim to spec . I did't know exactly where this guy was going with his question.
It seems that most people think this is the only shimming to perform in trans and sometimes perform this incorrectly and wonder why they can't keep bearings in trans.
I was only trying to spark intrest from others and to maybe get a better explanation of what he meant by 'shimming'

I mean, for all you and I know, he may have actually meant trans shimmy...
Again, wasn't trying to start debate betweeen you and I, but again, TRUST ME, I HAVE A CLUE!!!

BTW mista bone,
don't be to quick to state that countershaft doesn't have shims. It depends entirely on which trans you're working on.
I know for certain that Prelude and Accord trannys have a thrust washer/shim that you replace if not in spec.

Not trying to be a smart ***, just proving that you're not the only one who knows their way around internals of a trans. Besides that, nobody knows everything, right!!

(LOL) I totally understand what you mean.

I generally don't answer trans or engine building/rebuilding questions because I'm typically too busy aswering so many diagnostic questions.

Hell, the last 2 times today that I have wanted to get online to answer some new posts, I've been flooded with so many IM's that I had to play catch up until about 2 hours ago.

Oh well
