Transmission Problem
i would have run a search on this, but i dont even know what the problem is so i dont know what to search for.
i have a gsr transmission and it is making a weird sound. i dont really know how to describe it, but a couple people that have listened to it said it might be the throwout bearing. the noise is basically a loud spinning type sound. it makes the noise even when i am nuetral and the clutch isnt pressed in. when i press in the clutch, the noise slowly goes away. it almost sounds like it is slowing down/ stopping spinning.
this noise can also be heard when i am driving. sometimes when i push in the clutch and coast to a stop, the noise can still be heard. i am guessing my axels are spinning whatever is making the noise.
also, it recently started to get hard to switch gears why driving. it isnt always hard, but sometimes it is tought to switch. no mater what gear i am in. if i change gears at a low rpm (under 3k) there isnt a problem. however, sometimes when i try to switch after 4k or so, it feels like it doesnt want to go into gear.
another problem that i am having with it is sometimes when i release my clutch, it feels like the car is bouncing. an that is just a normal launch.. not racing.
anyone know what is wrong here? is it the throwout bearing? bad clutch? bad synchros? no trans fluid? i have no idea... please help
thank you

always check the fluids first, (clutch and tranny) and if it isnt that then it could possibly be your throw out bearing or a bad clutch. im thinking its the bearing though. hope that helps and good luck
thanks. has anyone else had this problem or know what it possibly could be. maybe i could take it to AAMCO for the free external diagnostic service, then fix it myself if it is just the clutch or throw our bearing.
Rule of thumb for this type problem is...If noise goes away when you push in clutch, the input shaft bearing may be bad. If the noise starts when you push in clutch, the release bearing is the most likely culprit. First make sure tranny is full of the correct oil....3gdude
I'll vote for input shaft bearing. Here's why.
Throw-out bearing can make noise when the clutch is engaged or when it's disengaged. They don't always fail the same way. But if it makes noise when the clutch is engaged, then disengaging the clutch would make it stop RIGHT NOW.
When you're in neutral and you disengage the clutch (by pressing down the pedal), the input shaft takes a couple seconds to coast to a stop. So the noise takes a couple seconds before it stops.

the input shaft bearing is something that i can replace right? i wont have to buy a whole new trans for that will i? i am planning on doing a swap(keeping the same trans though) here in the next month or two and i am going to replace clutch, flywheel, through out bearing, and now hopefuly this. anyone have any idea on the typical cost of a new input shaft bearing? thanks alot for your help.
Well, I'm not sure. Someone who's taken apart a Honda transmission can answer it better than me.
What spins along with the input shaft (when it's in neutral)? I suppose there's a few different bearings, maybe even synchro hubs, that could be making the noise. There's gotta be 1 or 2 that are common failures, but that's no guarantee. When you get the tranny out of the car I don't know if you can tell which is bad. You might have to take it apart to tell.
