Trans fluid in Ford Ranger
This forum is better than all others, so I'm asking this question here.
I know it's a long shot...
Does anyone know what would be a good trans fluid for my 2000 Ford Ranger? It's very hard to shift.
I know my civic began shifting like butter when I went from synthetic oil to Honda MTF.
Right now the Ranger has the same fluid it came with from factory. Thanks!
Oh it's the 3.0L V6 Engine, with manual tranny.

Does the owner's manual say anything about an oil specification? Like API GL4 or something? Lately there's some transmissions that only want some proprietary stuff.
I was about to recommend some GM Synchromesh... yet I remember an old truck I had used heavy GL5 gear oil. That stuff would kill Honda bearings in a hurry though... and GM Synchromesh may be too thin for that transmission. Check w/the dealer!
Thanks guys. It takes some kind of Mercon ATF. The only thing I can find is that some people have used synthetic ATF. I didn't even think about calling the dealer.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Just wondering - were you using Redline MTL? I have that in my 98 Teg, and the shifter can be pretty grouchy...
RS, who likes his syncros in one piece.

no, Mobil 1, i heard that Redline makes shift even smoother than Honda MTF. I'll stick to Honda though.

I dunno, my shifts are still pretty rocky. I really can't shift very quickly at all. Apparently my linkage is wonky, or I really suck at shifting...

ide say use the stock stuff.
the only reason i think it would be rocky is because its old, and used. try it, it shouldnt be that expensive. and if you dont like it then ide recommend sum synthetic stuff.
good luck.
