Default not bad

I think it's just as easy. There are more times that you'll need to use a hydrolic press, so that would be a major consideration. W/o one, I think all you can effectively do is the 1st gear synchros, shift forks and some bearings in the case. No problem if you have a Helms. It's the only one I know of that explains the slightly different size teeth on the 5th gear. I tried mine w/ a Chilton's and that led to repeated removal/disassemblies before a mechanic friend showed me.

all you really need to rebuild a b-series trans is a bench vice (for removing the nut on the mainshaft), a decent set of tools, and a good work area.
i've rebuilt my GSR YS1 trans and i attempted to rebuild my JDM S1 trans and neither required a hydraulic press. the helms manual says you need a press but i've never needed/used one.

and i think you meant the 5th gear synchro (on the counter shaft). the 1st gear synchro is at the bottom of the gearset.

Default cool

so how did you do it w/o using a press?
why do you say that you've only attempted a jdm s1? I have a jdm S1 and would like to know if there's a particular difficulty in those.

what I actually did was use a copy of someones b-series helms instructions as a guide to an L-series tranny for my old d16, which was grinding into 2nd. That was the only synchro that was accessible.

the gears were not that hard to just pull off of their respective shafts. i just re-installed the gears without pressing them and they are working fine.

i say i attempted to rebuild a JDM S1 trans because i was trying to replace my 3rd and 4th gears with 92-93 GSR gears and it did not work out.

as for the gear thing. 5th is on top. its the easiest gear (on the counter shaft) to get to no matter how you look at it. thats why i thought you maybe meant the 5th gear. here's a pic i just made for everyone. courtesy of helms and myself
