Default tranny problem??

let us first start off by saying that this problem is occuring in a 2000 ford contour SVT with only 31K miles.

my friend let me drive his car because he didn't know what was going on. here is what it is doing, when you let off of the clutch and push the gas the car shakes and stutters. it is not like when you let off of the clutch and not give it enough gas though. it is rougher. the car never stalls out but it wants to. even when you push more gas than is needed and you let off of the clutch slowly, it still does it. it won't let you put it in 2nd gear if you are doing over 20mph. it doesn't matter what gear you are coming out of. it could be in neutral and if you are doing 25mph, it still ain't going in no matter how hard you try. also 3rd gear grinds going in every time no matter what rpm or speed. 3rd gear works though. it doesn't pop out of any gear though. what is the problem?????

warped or broken disc would be my first guess.

Does that motor use one of the so called dual mass flywheels? If not, then my guess would also be a damaged clutch plate. I would expect the flywheel to look fairly sad too, along with the pressure plate.

the problem is that its a FORD. the focus is going into the guiness book of world records for the most recalls on a new car

Don't forget the Excape that had a bunch of recalls after delivery to dealers but before they could sell any. Dealers had to sit on their new vehicles for over a month before Ford could get them the parts to fix them and finally sell some.

my first initial thought was that the synchros were out in third and going out in second. you guys say that it is a clutch pressure plate, clutch disc, or fly wheel huh. the car accelerates very well in gear and when i can get it in gear at high rpms/horsepower, i don't feel any slippage. would you still guess the clutch components or the flywheel.

Slipping isn't the only way for a clutch to go bad. If the disk is warped or broken, it won't completely DISengage.
